From a UK perspective, I'd say that was Conservative policy in a nutshell... promising more but actually giving out less.
PC is Canadian equivalent to Republican. Alberta is just like Texas, right wing religious rednecks who think they know better because they found money in their dirt. Republican ideology has destroyed the American economy and the PC is doing their best to destroy Canada on a global scale as well.
You know, this is kind of funny, because just the other day I was talking about how Alberta is like the Texas of Canada.
They're not progressive, they're REGRESSIVE. A few years ago the PC (sort of like KFC, I guess) party 'united' the right wingers in Canada. (Ironically enough, when the Liberals were about to do the same thing with a coalition government in 2009, everyone got sooooo upset). Before 2003, the PCs were really hurting, and we also had this party called 'The Alliance', which used to be known as the 'Reform' party. They used to be STRONGLY against gay rights (basically, it was an abomination), hated immigrants, used to argue that bigotry was actually everyone's god-given right, basically wanted everyone in Canada to be white, and accepted money from skinheads and Alberta separatists.... yep, Nazis thought these guys were just peachy. THAT'S the party that our current asshole leader came from... and they are hugely popular... get ready.... in Alberta. Seriously, I can almost... almost understand the whole big business thing and how some people might want to support it.... I don't agree with those people, but I guess I can see where they're coming from in a way. But these cunts want to tell everyone what they should and shouldn't be doing... and they want to make Canada into this racist, sexist, backwards shithole where all of our natural resources are stripped away and sold, Albertans (not Canadians) become even richer, and the media isn't allowed to report any of it to anyone. Now we have a united right (a fucked up 'union' of moderates and borderline fascist reactionaries, led by a 'former' radical... which somehow doesn't scare NDPers into voting Liberal), a separatist party, a borderline socialist party, and a moderately left-wing party. The left is divided, Quebec is separatist, and the radicals are still learning how to temper their policies to the point where people will accept them. Honestly, I don't know how the country is still holding together.
Isn't it true that a considerable amount of people in Quebec want to opt out of the union and form thier own nation? Thier referendum was narrowly defeated, They were fueled by the 250th anniversary of the "Guerre du Conquest" Could the people in Alberta be reacting with thier own style of lunacy to what is happening in Quebec? seems extremesm breeds extermism.
Practice a little army doctor style triage: Don't move to places where true progressives are abundant. (Taking coals to Newcastle). They don't need you to get good legislation passed. Don't move to places where your numbers are so low that nothing can get done. Instead, move to places where the rednecks have a bare majority, where you can tip the balance to the side of forward thinking people. It will take some deliberate action by more than one family, but the idea should work. If true progressives have a majority but are constantly having to compromise with more conservative groups and can only pass good legislation as long as it is watered down, well that's where more of you should move as well. Of course this is done in conjunction with community organizing, well-written political ads to improve the odds of getting your favorite people elected too.
