I saw this movie about three days ago on the channel with all the really old movies. It was called The Old Man and the Sea. It was about this old fisherman from Cuba who recently hasnt caught any fish. He sails into the Gulf and a huge marlin gets his line. It is so strong that it pulls him out into the Gulf for 2 days and 2 nights until it gets tired and he stabs it with a harpoon. I wasnt really interested in the story but every time id try to change the channel, it was like I was in a trance and I couldnt do it.

Sounds a bit like Moby Dick...

It must be based on a book of the same name, by Ernest Hemingway.

I remember having it explained to me that it represents the struggle of man, his success, and his eventually failure (in this case, the sharks devouring the fish which he worked so hard to catch). Doing a bit of research on it, it may have also been a representation of Hemingway's struggles as a writer.

I haven't seen the film, but I have read the book. I wasn't very interested in the story either, but when I was told that is was meant to be drawn-out to make a point, I can appreciate it more (although I would probably never read it again :p).

I was recently mezmorized by an old movie as well. A version of the 1930 version of The Phantom of the Opera (1925)!

(What a doozy of a sentence)
