A vote in the UN General Assembly on Nov. 16, 2010 marks a profound change in the UN policy concerning the condemnation of extrajudicial, summary or arbitrary executions - sexual orientation (previously listed) is no longer part of the resolution condemning those executions.

"The amendment removing the reference to sexual orientation was sponsored by Benin on behalf of the African Group in the UN General Assembly and was adopted with 79 votes in favor, 70 against, 17 abstentions and 26 absent."

That fucking sucks, but being close to the gay community through friends and family I am quite taken a back. And even after the suicides in America because of discrimination of gay kids....

What I think I get out of this is that America and Canada, and probably a good chunk of Europe is more open and accepting of different sexualities than the majority of the world. There are 52 or 53 countries in Africa and the vote was 79 to 70...so there is a good chunk right there...already known social politically behind governments. That is an understatement of the prejudice you can find in many African countries and including many Middle Eastern and Asian countries as well.

It's sad this kind of thing can be dis-appreciated still, and be thankful for living in considerably more openly perceiving part of the world.

And if the case to not even be thankful for that is true, then be thankful for the accepting and loving people in your life.

I just voiced my opinion a little bit. I think gay rights are ridiculous. Instead of encouraging straight people to "come out", why don't they encourage women to be more feminine and men to be more masculine so that deviations like this don't happen? But again, that was a characteristic of traditional couples. Now that women have equal rights, they will never be as feminine as they were again. Yes, their brains were wired to be supportive and such. It's not pseudoscience.

It's about the right to not be arbitrarily executed.
Do you understand what that means?
By removing sexual orientation from their Human Rights policy they have opened the door for easy access execution of gays, or people who are suspected of being gay, without cause.
Surely even you have the decency to think that people shouldn't be killed for absolutely no valid reason whatsoever.

Your "opinion" is objectively and demonstrably wrong.

"Deviations" like this have happened since the beginning of time. The only difference is that in the past it was more difficult to come out because everyone was trying to encourage women to be more feminine and men to be more masculine, AKA create stereotypes.

I suspect that your definitions of masculine and feminine are incredibly narrow though, and are objective/material based, so that probably doesn't bother you.

How has equal rights de-feminized women?
How has equal rights caused women to not be supportive?

As with almost all votes, those who decided to either not vote, or not show up could have changed the outcome of it.

Just to be clear though, this isn't going to change much... Those countries who voted against it being removed, already have laws that protect minorities... and those countries who voted to have it removed... don't...

First they let women vote, then they let them drive and then they let them smoke cigarettes and now look where we are. [/troll]

from one view, this is really sad. that the UN has regressed.

however, from a political science point of view (my own) this is awesome that Africa is gaining so much power.

eh that came out wrong. sorry.

That in this time this is even still open for consideration as far as protection and being persecuted is a sad statement.

That any country could view a whole sector of human kind as not having equal rights of protection is unforgivable.

Does not lend to the notion of reasoned thought and compassion and equal justice as being a human trait shared by most.

This is a human rights issue and with these type of rulings it means that at any time they can further strip the enforcement or compliance of human rights on any issue. This may very well be just the start.
