Why do they put music in films. Even when it's good it's still a bit of a gimmick. Why can't they just let the action and dialogue etc. stand on it's own merits? What would happen if they took it out? It's almost like saying they don't have the confidence in what's going on on the screen. I also feel a bit manipulated esp. by sentimental music. Yes it can be very moving in a scene but if it wasn't there would the scene still be as moving? The don't have music playing over scenes in theatres.
It does kind of make life seem surreal by enhancing a scene with music. Like everyone knows just the perfect thing to say at any given point in time. Media influence and propaganda at it's finest. Though, the music in films like Pirate Radio makes the movies even better sometimes. idk... good point tho!
I don't like movies with hard-core gangster rap in them, it's like every time there is a car chase or any action scene really, they got to have some hard-core rap playing.
i don't know what to say. music serves many purposes in film. i'm not an expert so i can't go and list them or anything, but i'm sure that in most cases it helps make a more entertaining movie. of course there's situations where it's unnecessary.
yes i dont like how movies and tv shows are manipulated into trying to put people in one mindset or emotion. but i do like how it is used artistically also. and i love when movie-makers just play a song while the dialogue happens, for example one of the later scenes in Boogie Nights.
I don't think the music is tehre to manipulate - it's more to help "set the tone" for the scenes. Just like on internet forums where you can't always tell someone's motivation in a post - so they may put "emoticons" like smilies in to "set the tone" of their message. So music in films help to set a tone that may not get translated well due to movies needing to tell a story in cut scenes and chapters, etc. Often it is quite good too, IMO.
Music triggers emotion in most people so to have it in a movie or show would enhance the feeling. There have been some outstanding soundtracks over the decades. Is it sometimes unnecessary, probably. I think though I would miss hearing it. Possibly conditioning but I would find it odd to have none in a film.
To Cover Up The Sound Of Theatre Goers Eating Crisps During Parts Of The Movie Where There Is No Dialogue.... Cheers Glen.
yeah you're right. i guess the difference is if its a badly made movie or tv show. if you watch ghost story shows or forensic-like shows on A&E, that is music to manipulate, imo. terrible actually. but for the most part music is just an augmentation, but i'd rather have it creatively used or not at all.
Music adds a dynamic to the movie as others say to intensify the scene. It can definitely be overdone but if its done well I think its better than no music. Blair Witch Project doesn't have any music I believe and I'm sure there are others. I think without music I probably would not be able to concentrate on most movies for 2+ hours.
Same here. Also, with pretty much all 80's movies once a sex scene starts you can always count on a saxophone kicking in.
Definitely a key moment for one of the best 80's chiches. I always think of the saxophone player in the Lost Boys even though they didn't have sex to that song...
In the 70s it used to be heavy metal and the Miles Davis pimp music dubbed into the action scenes. Then there was Chips which always had the disco music going when those two took off on their motorcycles. Someone mentioned sax for sex in the 80s. Things change with the times. .
Would the music still be as moving without the scene? They compliment each other. Not true. Where do you think cinema got the idea?
