Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez has opened his palace to 25 families made homeless by severe flooding and mudslides. Chavez is moving his security out of their rooms, allowing the homeless to move in. He's also giving up one of his offices to be turned into a home for three families.

    Bravo Chavez!

Chavez needs political points considering how bad his party did in the elections this year.

Guys, Venezuela has had a very large poor population since long before Chavez, as well as other natural disaster issues since Chavez took office 10 years ago. it takes him 10 years and a disastrous legislative poll with upcoming presidential elections next year to invite poor people his executive mansion? I mean that's great for the people chosen but really, this is the same if Bush had had a dozen black families from New Orleans come live at the White House after kayne said Bush doesn't like black people. I mean it's all good and all for those people, but it's just political posturing.

Who cares if it's posturing if he helps people in need?

This. Also, why do we even have homeless people? We should be taking care of each other. That's a given.

I think creating permanent solutions would be better, which as leader of these people is what he should be doing. But I guess if there's a presidential palace with 25 vacant apartments, why not?

Because it's too little too late.
25 families now have a place to sleep, what of the millions that don't?
It's a political move designed as a feel good story. "Chavez is a man of the people, he shares his own with the homeless". It's really great for those 25 families, but it's only a gesture, the impact of which is largely insignificant. A man of his power and influence is supposed to have the capacity to make changes on a much broader scale.

Rewarding basic humanity. Do they want a medal?

"Oh, you've done what was supposed to be done. That's so nice!" Providing basic needs isn't 'nice' it's essential and should be expected. I mean, what are the alternatives?

Personally I agree with you but humanity isn't really on the government's radar- apart from making a big show of helping in some crisis overseas- but homelessness at home is something to be made invisible because it isn't about the people. If that which hurts the general population couldn't be used against those in power to make them look bad then nothing at all would be done about anything... there's no real political hay to be made by helping people right here at home, but an earthquake, flood, or other calamity elsewhere is a crisis they can use to further their agenda.... and make it seem to most that they give a fuck about regular people but nothing could be further from the truth.
