Unless you get arrested or have to go to the emergency room, I don't get how one can have a "bad trip". I've tripped more times than I can count and I can't say that I've had a "bad trip". Sure, some trips are better and more memorable than others but none have been outright "bad". There have been difficult times where I've been forced to confront things I wasn't willing or ready to, but these feelings always pass and I feel better afterwards.

My ex ate a little too much acid at a Zappa Plays Zappa show once when she was pretty drunk(it was her first time). She had no respect for the power of the chemical and insisted on eating a fairly large dose and she kind of freaked out, spent a lot of time crying. I had to escort her back to the hotel where she spent the trip in the bathroom refusing to talk to anyone.

The next day she decided to make some fairly significant life changes, that were definitely for the better. And she is living a much healthier, happier lifestyle because of those decisions. I think this was clearly a result of the trip. She claims the trip was horrible and refuses to do psychedelics again, which is fine. Psychedelics are not for everyone and there's only one way to find out if they are your thing or not.

But I still wouldn't consider that a "bad trip". Scary...yes. But in a way it kind of saved her life because she's not snorting and shooting an 8 ball of blow everyday anymore. Coincidence? I guess it's possible but I think not.

So for those who claim to have had a "bad trip", what made it bad? What is a "bad trip"? I don't think there is such a thing, prove me wrong.

I wish I could have a "bad" trip, I just haven't been getting much out of my recent trips and I want to be scared shitless so I can learn something :p

I know what you mean. I've kind of been in a rut myself. But I think the answer is fairly simple, increase dose. I think 45 mg of 4-aco-dmt sometime this week will do wonders.

The one bad mushroom trip I had was due to not taking care of set and setting. I tripped and enjoyed it for 2 hours but all the potheads bailed on us early and went home. Me and my other friend wandered around town for a couple hours shroomin out. I wanted to be off the drug but i wasn't like freaking out either and nothing was really gained from that trip as far as insight. I've also had a few on my own where I just chose a bad day to trip and wanted to be sober as the trip barely began and found them unenjoyable.

I have taken LSD and shrooms 100 of times(more so shrooms) and have yet to experience anything close to bad. I think i am way to laid back.

OP- i had a very close experience to that of your girlfriend, at one point in my life i was doing lots of heroin and any time i would trip would feel really bad about it. For some reason it was the only time i could really be honest with myself about how bad it was. So while these trips weren't "happy go lucky" experiences they were probably the best trips of my life. And most of them were by myself.

From my experience alot of the people who have "bad-trips" are immature kids that cannot appreciate psychedelics.

although i guess i can understand how some people could just be completely freaked out and not get anything beneficial from there trip, which could be called a bad trip. Its a personal thing in the end.

Its weird you view it that way to me and I understand that's your experience but I think almost in the opposite way. I like think in a sense those who have done psychedelics alot and never had a bad trip are "immature."

Its just hard for me to imagine based on the good/bad day ratio of sober life that someone won't run into a bad trip every now and then. Psychedelics basically just magnify all my feelings and thoughts so its like I think almost someone who has never had a bad trip is just suppressing the bad through psychedelics. I appreciate psychedelics good and bad just as I appreciate life.

Interesting point, i understand what you are saying. I can only speak for myself and from my experience here. I have never had a just flat out bad trip. I have had some that are better than others and i have even had some really depressing heavy internal trips(Like stated above), But i believe those saved my life.

Psychedelics do the same for me, magnify my feelings and thoughts and i know there have been times that i was not able to trip because of this. So for me the mature partakers of psychedelics will respect them and not just treat it like pot which can be done whenever wherever. Whereas the "immature-kids" will/may not.

I've had 1 bad acid trip, shit just got too intense, I was becoming the music and not me anymore at a fest I wasn't ready for that, started to feel like I was dying, closed my eyes and saw a satanic patten, I remember telling myself just let go but I started blacking out whenever I tried. I'm glad I didn't make a scene but my friends had to hear me bitching about how hard I was tripping. From one tiny hit of some liquid.

I've never had one but the other day my friend was telling me that he had and that basically everything went dark and gloomy instead of being bright and cheery, he started freaking-out, thinking people were taking/conspiring about him. He also said his trip was really intensified.

Think about a good wonderful trip filled with positive vibes. Now think about the complete opposite. Even though its the most horrifying thing that you may ever experience, its always all good in the end.

I've never had a bad trip.

I've had shit get really fucking intense; confusing, scary even; but not bad.
I was looking to trip. If I wasn't prepared for a little bit of insanity, I wouldn't've tripped.

    I agree with OP completely.

Yeah I was always one to keep my head, even when shit gets crazy I was always able to keep mine and help people. I NEVER thought I could ever possibly have a bad trip. I had at least 1000 good ones before my first bad one.

the last time i took lsd i died. that has NEVER happened to me before. it was kinda scary but i guess i'm alive now, so it's all good?

    lol.

i think the difference between a bad trip and a good trip is simply the content of the experience and what you take from the aftermath of the trip. you definitely shouldn't go into an experience thinking that you can't have a negative experience. maybe you could have a difficult experience and learn alot from it, or maybe you could have an ecstatic experience and learn nothing, or maybe you could have a negative experience that negatively impacts your life, or you could even have an ecstatic experience that has incredibly positive effects on your life. there are an infinite amount of ways that your trip could go. these are all things to take into consideration, when you are thinking about your set and setting.

but i think, that the concept of 'the big bad trip' is really just a fear driven notion of the human mind that doesn't really hold much basis in reality.

I started to have a bad trip on mushrooms once. It was really a matter of not being in the right place or time; i had had a huge fight with my boyfriend earlier that night and i was tripping with a friend that i didn't entirely feel comfortable with. I really started to panic and although my trip didn't turn completely bad, it gave me insight into how bad a "bad" trip could really be. But I ended up sitting myself down in a corner and telling myself over and over again that I could trust the shrooms, and i came out of it. this also made me realize that i'll probably never have a bad trip on mushrooms because I do trust them not to lead me astray.

what exactly does that mean? I've experienced ego death from shrooms before in the sense that i ceased to exist in my body and mind as an entity that is seperate from everything else. is that what people are referring to when they say they die on hallucinogens?

well this particular experience was unlike any kind of ego death i've ever had.

my reality came to an end, and then i was woken up in this reality. everything is still exactly the same, but it was still a very strange and slightly disturbing experience. i attribute this less to the raw power of lsd and more to the fact that i was heavily dosed at a furthur show surrounded by hundreds of deadheads everywhere. it was actually kind of a relief when i died.

but like i said, i've never experienced anything like that ever before in my life.
