The police said they would let us go home when they deemed that we were no longer a threat to the public. We stopped chanting and asked if we could leave; we could only leave when we had given our names and addresses and had our photos taken. So we didn't get much choice as to when we could leave. On the 9th we marched our designated route and then were not allowed down Whitehall due to a police corden so we moved up the other way by Regents Park. My friend and I wandered around looking for another route to whitehall and finally managed to blag our way through a police corden on Whitehall itself, and got to Parliament Square where people had already made headway in taking down the Harris fencing. Within the next half hour we found ourselves surrounded by police, and people started lighting fires as it was cold. We chanted at the edge of the police lines for a bit and danced to some music and I found a lot of people I had lost on the march. I personally stayed in Parliament Square for about 3 hours before the Brighton Uni UCU negotiated with the police to have us let out of the kettle to catch our coach, at which point we had to walk through a "sterile area" where noone was allowed to stop and wait. Others who didn't leave told me that at 5:30pm the news of the vote came through and by this point the energy had left the demo and people felt defeated and wanted go home. Only the police wouldn't let them. This made people angry and that's when it all kicked off. The demo was eventually moved onto Westminster Bridge and people were allowed to go around 11pm, 11 hours after the march started.
Ok, so you were OUTSIDE a :bobby: corden and decided to ENTER a :bobby: corden. You blagged your way PAST a :bobby: corden? You were on the WRONG side of a :bobby: corden? Mmmm....
Socialized education for all that want it and can cut it. Include it in budgets and cut other useless things like war, foreign aid, ect. Why should money be the criteria for obtaining an education. How many geniouses are filling menial jobs for lack of money?
I find this image deeply disturbing. Children protecting a meat wagon?! I dread to think how those kids are going to turn out. There's always a hell of a lot more protesters than cops injured in violent demo's. Ian Tomlinson was killed by a riot cop. I don't endorse any form of violence, but it is an aspect of our society and nature, and where there is confrontation and anger it is likely to occur, so I am not surprised that it did. I think the raised fees will certainly put off those from poorer backgrounds from going to university and as such lead to greater social division and a less fair society. Oh, and it just so happens to be a Tory policy.
i would suggest that it was an inflammatory action on the part of police, to stop protesters from protesting outside whitehall...
Well, that's what the caption says, anyway. For all anyone can tell from the picture they might just as easily have been preventing it from being used instead. Especially as current policies seem designed to make the poor poorer. I suppose, to be fair, the tories do believe that they're working towards a fairer society... its just that their definition of fair is a small elite [them] at the top, and everybody else at the bottom.
