yep its a kind of ring round the sun, the one i seen was only visible on the left and right side of the sun but it was pretty cool, heres a pic of one i found online the one i seen was quite similar..
sun dogs are partial rainbows on either side of the sun...are they not? i haven't seen any today, but i see them somewhat frequently, especially with sunglasses on I LOVE RAINBOWS
:sunny: It seems so. A sun dog or sundog (scientific name parhelion, plural parhelia, from Greek parēlion, (παρήλιον), παρά(beside) + ήλιος(sun), "beside the sun"; also called a mock sun) is an atmospheric phenomenon that creates bright spots of light in the sky, often on a luminous ring or halo on either side of the sun.[1] Sundogs may appear as a colored patch of light to the left or right of the sun, 22° distant and at the same distance above the horizon as the sun, and in ice halos. They can be seen anywhere in the world during any season, but they are not always obvious or bright. Sundogs are best seen and are most conspicuous when the sun is low. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sun_dog
I've seen those and their relative the sun halo. Halos are like sun dogs but need all the ice crystals to be randomly oriented. These phenomena are sometimes there but less pronounced and therefore go unnoticed. I've become more observant of them as I've gotten more involved with watercraft and have become more mindful of weather conditions. Sometimes you can review photos that you have taken and find these things when you didn't notice them while taking the picture. A little photo processing can sometimes help bring these things out. It's good to become more observant of Mama Earth! .
The sun halos I've seen tend to occur when the atmosphere is very still and there are high wispy cirrus clouds. You know, like the kind in the Bob Ross paintings. Happy little clouds. Perhaps the stillness helps the ice crystals form or become randomly oriented. .
I am not sure if I have ever seen one! Or if I have had no clue what I was even looking at! Thanks for sharing your photo, it is really neat.
ive seen these. if the sun is behind a cloud it can be hard to tell which is the real sun since it crates a bright spot
The photo of moon is pretty cool. Nearly the whole 22 degree arc can be seen. There are other shafts of light in that photo as well. .
can't believe i have never seen one! will be watching out for those... never even heard of the term till today... i've seen those double rainbows lots before, but never this... thanks for posting all these pics people
I have some lens tricks, I used to love taking pictures this way , since most my cameras suck but take good effect pics if you work with them...
