I dunno they have some fairly diverse material but the album 'Dirt' to me is the epitome of grunge music, Something going on there different than metal. Its got such a pessimistic hypnotic sludgy junkie sound yet some songs/melodies on it are achingly tender and beautiful.

grunge started by a new punk movement where people would do mosh pits and things they were against hair bands and showing off if they had radio music it was left of the dial where no one looked nirvana got famous and made it popular nirvana never wanted to be as popular as most hair bands and such so yeah and most of kurts early songs were COMPLETELLY random angry thoughts in his head... so get your facts straight nirvana thought they were playing punk and it just happened to be influenced by heavy metal (not hair metal bassically original shiz)

David Bowie and Michael Jackson are more performers than muscians :p

Dubstep is a type of electronic music that uses a syncopated beat and usually adds an annoying heavy synth bass line that 'wobbles' and drowns out the rest of the music.

I believe the music originated in the early part of the century from cats (actual felines) who would fake injuries to get ketamine then hop on their owners ableton program while they were away and create these awful sounds.

new form of music? Off the wall sounds like most the other 70's dance at the time

Hendrix wrote and played guitar on 'purple haze' 'foxy lady' 'hey joe' 'castles made of sand' 'little wing' 'voodoo childe'

He completely reinvented the electric guitar. Like I said I play guitar so I have some bias but If youre going to tell me no way to Hendrix dont bring up Michael Jackson as a great musician.

i agree with spatula, a lot of jimi was showcasing. michael is less showcasing, but like 64.9% performer, 35.1% musician i'd say

i agree with this. I don't know enough about david bowie to say whether or not he was a true musician, but michael jackson was definitely more of a performer. Thats what i was trying to get at earlier in the thread with madonna. Writing a few of your own songs does not make you a musician. A real musician has control over every aspect of their music and does not need someone else to come in and help them write their songs.

I looked into madonna and found out she writes her lyrics and comes up with the melody on most of her songs, but other people write the music around the melody. I still think shes more of a performer than a musician.

What about Frank Zappa for the 60s or 70s? He wasn't as popular as John Lennon but maybe more influential? He composed in just about every style of music there is: pop, classical, jazz, rock, experimental....

i think that qualification is a lil too tough. and a lil confusing too when really thought about. does it mean it's only called musicianship when one person is composing and performing everything? i dont think one should have to assimilate control to consider it music. you can walk outside without an ipod or anything and hear music, made by everything but you (or with you but youre a performer).

and who says madonna doesn't have control over all her stuff? she doesnt need to hand carve it herself but she can certainly approve of it. she, along with performers like michael jackson are like politicians running for office, they are the name of the group but they have a committee. also how are bands necessarily different?

Almost no musician is a true musician then since most artists and bands use an experienced producer to produce their albums to their final state. I mean what about someone like Shirley Manson, she generally only sings for Garbage while writing the lyrics, the music is a full band collaboration, is she any less of a musician? or Bob Dylan, Desire is one of his most respected albums that he had a lot of collaboration on. Michael Jackson may not have wrote all his songs, but he did write Beat it, Billie Jean, Bad, Black or White, The Girl is Mine, Smooth Criminal, ect, essentially a lot of the songs that helped make him what he was.

as a Performer no doubt Michael Jackson had a huge impact, youre out of your mind if you think MJ was half as important as Hendrix as a musician though.

Maybe we can meet halfway and choose Prince ;)

Lulz wikipedia doesn't even list musician as one of Michael Jackson's occupations.

I think you're a bit off base with Hendrix too. The first 2 albums are pretty much all psychedelic pop rock songs, only 1 song on each album ventures past the 5 minute mark.

someone who writes music is called a song-writer, I do not consider someone who sings like a pre-pubescent girl a musician certainly not a great one, and someone who dances on stage is a performer.

ummmm... Ok so you are going to say the most important musician is someone who doesn't play an instrument LOL

This is a trivial debate and you picked a dumb fucking choice and I only chose to make a remark to you because you did so to me in regards to the most important guitarist the world had or has seen in the past 50 years.

Yeah, instrumentist = musician. Woody Guthrie is a 3rd rate guitarist when it comes to playing but is one of the most famous songwriters of the 20th century. Some of the most famous composers of the classical and romantic era could only play piano.

Also while I'm not one of them a lot of guitarists think Hendrix was overrated in terms of how much he could actually do even compared to other guitarists at the time who didn't wind up as famous.
