Does anybody else have to work alone for hours everyday at a restaurant or in retail?

I really would like to know if there is anybody else out there that has found themselves in that type position.

I am a cook, and it has wound up so that I am required each day I work, 4 afternoon/evenings per week, I have to work from 1 - 2 hours alone. It drives me just effing insane and I have not been silent about this; although I do not harp on something constantly. (Just not me - but just because I don't always, every moment complain about something doesn't mean I LIKE it...ya know?)

When I accepted this job, it was NOT with this understanding...that I'd be expected to work up to 2 hours alone, doing this working alone every single day I worked, even weekends. But...jobs are hard to find. Particularly since I have the opposite of "job luck". But that is another subject...

I just had to ask - does anybody else do this? Even have to work alone every single day for a longish period of time? Truly, I don't see me keeping on and on with this shit. Particularly when the woman that signs my checks doesn't see why I shouldn't be there for 2 hours alone!!! Am I being a baby, or old...or foolish? (cause it can be purtee hell in a diner for 2 hours 3-5)

The work I am doing currently is always done alone.

In the past I have done vegetation surveys for the government in which I had to spend every day working alone in the woods.

    I personally love working alone.

i'm alone for about an hour or two each shift i work. fucking sucks always having assholes bothering you when you're trying to get shit done.

when i first started college i was working summers for the parks department; i would sometimes go an entire day without seeing another person. goddamn i miss that job.

I'm in the same boat as you and unfortunatly there's nothing you can do but work through it. At the restaurant I'm at usually I'll close 3 or 4 nights out of the 5 I work, and by the last hour or 2 I'm usually always by myself. So basically it closes at midnight and the 2nd last cook will go at around 10-10:30.

Most nights I really don't mind this, but there's been a couple where I get slammed hard and it's tough when you're by yourself. Espiecally since you have to do all the cooking, dishwashing, prepping, salads, cleaning, etc. I definatly agree it can be fucking hell sometimes, but it's a great feeling when you're all done.

    i work alone a lot.
i work long stretches alone, and then interact active and close with people briefly. like long stretches of solitude and bursts of interpersonal bizness...

do you guys not like working alone?
i love the solitude of my work, for sure.

i don't like not working alone.

some social interaction is nice, but the ideal job would be about 5 hours a week of dealing with people and 35 solo.

yeah, right? and freedom too, don't forget freedom and working without supervision. Beautiful!!!

i love to be mostly a man alone at work, but then have these little bursts where i can nut up and get excited and pour energy into it.
it is fun to have bursts of interaction.

i work alone for 9 hours, 1-3 nights a week. Unless you count the dogs, when I say alone I mean not another human soul in the building until 6am when the morning crew gets in. I don't mind working alone (it's actually a nice break from my other job where i work on a team of about 45 loudmouth screwballs lol) but I do get sketched about having a break in while I'm here alone. I usually have enough work to keep me busy but it's sloooow tonight, only 6 dogs and no cats, and all my work is just about finished. Got to find some way to eat up the next 4 hours...

I would rather work alone than with some of the dill weeds I've had to deal with. Not everyone is good company.

I work alone about 30 hours a week, the other 20 with people. I like working with people but I am far more productive working alone. No interruptions.

When at the office, less gets done than working from home. The advantage is that I can also work off hours, so it could be during the evening or marathon on the weekend to meet time goals.

I would not give up the office time as I really do like people.

Working in a restaurant is like nothing else on earth, rather like no other job.
I worked for the state as an evaluator for 12 yrs; and much of that (the endless writing of the reports, etc.) was of course done alone. In fact, according to the type of job - such as working outside, working alone could even be preferable! I know, when I worked at a desk basically I looked forward to being alone because I was always able to be more productive alone.

So I do know that working by one's self isn't always the pits of hell that it IS when you work at a restaurant/diner.
There ought to be a law against this. Our owners are wealthy, with kaboodles of rental property, not counting their own fine home on the lake...
But I digress...these ppl are also known for suddenly closing up shop (but this is my 1st go-round with them). I have also found out they have a history of eventually working it so that the cook has to work by themselves. At any rate, especially since I have become being more verbal about this not wanting to work alone shit, I definitely feel my time there is limited. :D

Do you have difficulty being alone in general or just while you are at work?

I always the customer with me and that drives me nuts with them asking all kinds of questions...but the longer it takes the more they get charged so I guess it all works out in the end

my dream job would be a quiet place where I was alone and able to sleep...Id much rather get paid to sleep and then use my regular time to do things I want to do...I keep looking for night watchman type jobs but I guess theyre so awesome that no one quits or retires from them :p

That sounds exactly like the job my Dad has. He has alarm systems set up to warn him if someone's coming and sleeps or watches movies the rest of the time.:p It reminds me of Homer Simpson's job.

dope, I just don't want to have to be alone in this diner in Timbucktoo in the middle of the day...and have literally about 25 things I need to be doing besides waiting on whatever customers happen by, or call.

as far as being alone, I am probably the most solitary person - living-wise you'll meet...asides from my animals. :) So, the being alone part doesn't bother me so much...I just think at work, especially in these days and times - unless you are in a plant/mill or behind bulletproof glass in a "cage" - a person should not be required to work alone.

Plus - last but definitely not least, (you know about hindsight being 20/20?)
I definitely should have added to the thread title "at a restaurant or in retail" at the end.

But at least the holidays at coming up....yay!:elf:
