I'm just getting dreads and I'm only going to get 3 or 4, but at the moment I only have one. I used the crochet hook method and I was wondering when it will stop sticking up. Also, I was wondering how long I have to wait to wrap it with ribbon or string. AND I was wondering if I could wear a knitted beanie hat with them. Your help is very much appreciated.
Eventually... anywhere from a week or two to a couple months but everyone's hair does it's own thing. There is no set timeline for how things will look after x-amount of days You don't HAVE to wait, but if you want the hairs to actually lock up you should leave it alone for at least a few months before you start putting shit on it. Hats are fine. ...In summery: patience+time=locks
I wrapped youngish dreads, and they shrunk massively (getting shorter and fatter) except where they were wrapped, so my dreads had a series of "bottlenecks" in them that have never really corrected themselves, also wraps are a bitch to cut out. If your dreads are still shrinking (pretty much the first 6 months to a year) then wraps are probably a bad idea IMHO.
