The European Union's Court of Justice has ruled that the Dutch town Maastricht is legally entitled to prohibit sales of cannabis to foreigners in coffeeshops. The owner of the "Easy Going" coffeeshop challenged Maastricht's ban on the grounds that all EU citizens are allowed equal access to any European market goods. The court simply ignored EU law and ruled against the coffeeshop.

Ironically, Maastricht now wants to reverse its ban, and just move the coffeeshops even closer to the borders. That seems unwise since it will just deprive Maastricht businesses of that border trade. I mean some visitors do stop and have a meal or shop too.

The Dutch government on the other hand wants to ban all foreigners from purchasing marijuana all over the country. Amsterdam is fighting the ban supported by the conservative Dutch government.

I just marked Maastricht off my places to visit in Holland next summer on my bike tour.
Ever wonder why governments fear weed?
Maybe it makes you think, and people who think make governments uncomfortable.

From a legal standpoint the ruling makes sense, the drug market isn't part of the general consumer market since technically marijuana is still illegal in the Netherlands to begin with.

It'd probably be a civil infraction and a fine for simple possession if they actually arrested people for it.

I keep having this sense that follow the money trail.. If everyone goes to Holland for vacations to burn buds. What about all the other regions in the world. People are less to book flights to these places cause HOLLAND is common knowledge when it comes to cannabis.

So now you have all these travel agencies booking to one location while other airlines suffer, and then the country is also overburdened with tourist..

just seems weird that all the sudden the big change, when Cannabis is making leaps and bounds in other parts the world. Holland should of thought of this years ago. Not now..

If Prop 19 had passed, everyone would be going to California now, and I would've opened a coffeeshop.

This will go the same way as the ban on parties in Goa ten or so years ago. They were going round arresting people for drugs and then the tourism industry started suffering, so the local government reversed the ban on parties and exercised a more lenient policy towards drugs.

Amsterdam according to my European friends is already full of 1/2 ass quality buds in many shops there right now..Some places still have the good buds you would expect, but a lot of talk is saying that Amsterdam's total weed quality is the lowest in 10 years on average.Their are a few hash/cannabis cafe's that still have the high quality product, but more have lesser quality than in years past.I will go to Spain myself next time in Europe instead of making a 7th trip to Amsterdam.Heard Cannabis in spain is getting very potent and the laws are lenient.I know some countries like Portugul have decriminilised all drugs and cannabis and hash also.Since IMO cannabis and hash or anything made from or with them are medicine and not "drugs" like cocaine or heroin, which come from plants ,but are extracted with very dangerous nasty chemicals to obtain a purifyied version of the plants natural alkaloids, like heroin from the opium poppy and cocaine from the coca bush, which chewing coca leave is no more addictive than caffeine and most likely less addictive..cannabis is not addictive in any form as we all know and cannabis Overdose is Impossible.

I have noticed the quality of some types of hash I used to buy a lot of going down. I think it is because the government recently busted a load of farms that were producing it. Well done the dutch government, bunch of right wing loony fuck heads.

I think they can't do anything to you if it's less than like 5 grams, I've heard. I think it's only illegal on a technicality really because of an international treaty that was signed like 60 years ago by a lot of countries.

I see multipule reasons that it's not an unfair ruling, and it IS their call to make. It's a sort of "we have the good sense to do this for our citizens, but don't want drug tourism bringing in stupid people and bad reputations". I totally understand. On the other hand, without weed.... who the FUCK would want to go to the netherlands? I mean, it's a cool place, but there's waaaay cooler.... And if it's repressive evil governments EVERYWHERE, no reason to choose the cold wet place with no particularly amazing scenery or anything.

*edit* "something clever", no.... You seem to be talking about the 1970 (I think) UN convention on psychotropic substances, which is when the UN basically all stood shoulder to shoulder and admitted to being evil fascist pigs who want to control your brain, in the most literal sense. Cannabis is still illegal in the netherlands, and they would probably only tolerate it even if it where possible to make it legal, because that gives them a retreat path, in case of another needle park style fiasco.
