Apple has removed an online application from its store that allowed people to donate to Wikileaks. Trudy Muller, an Apple spokeswoman, said the company had removed the app “because it violated our developer guidelines.” Ms. Muller added: “Apps must comply with all local laws and may not put an individual or group in harm’s way.” Apple is just the next in a series of companies that have banned wikileaks even though they have not be charged or convicted of any crimes. Will the online vigilantes who protect Internet freedom respond? http://bits.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/...app-from-its-store/?scp=2&sq=wikileaks&st=cse
The government robs us of our taxes, spends it all on war, lies to us, bullies us and robs us of our freedoms. Then all the multi-national corporations that infiltrate the government and influence their policies through secret donations prevent us from supporting a site that promotes the truth! I can feel a world war coming on I really can, people aren't going to stand for this shit.
I'm not. You spend hundreds of dollars on an ipod only to have the software be a nearly unuasable resource-hog with no alternatives, and without it, the device is worthless. That's a trap if I ever saw one. Seriously. I wouldn't have an ipod if I hadn't received one as a Christmas present last year (from my fiance, who insists on dragging me kicking and screaming into the 21st century)... I think since then I've spent a dollar on one app... something I don't plan to repeat. It wasn't even worth that. I do like podcasts, though. Listening to radio stations I normally wouldn't get. That part's fun. So while I am disappointed in Apple's concession, I'm not about to throw my ipod in a fire over it... :willy_nilly:
Now, I may be wrong about this... but does not each company that does this, face the prospect of lawsuits? For example, if apple can't prove that "Apps must comply with all local laws and may not put an individual or group in harm’s way" applies as a reason to block the app, can the app maker not sure them? Same with amazon and paypal and all the others? Although their terms of service may reserve the right to offer service on their terms, no contract can be enforced that goes against the laws... Is not each of these companies violating laws regarding at the very least, libel for unfounded accusations?
You can play mp3s on there, it's not that bad. But there are some fatalflaws in it such no abode flash. It's not nearly as bad as the PSP.
Gotta have the latest, the greatest, the up-to-datest... I don't think Apple fans have cornered the market on missing conscience. I think the general "don't give a fuck" attitude is a key piece in the puzzle as to what the hell is wrong with people in general today. Corporate forces moving in unison to abridge the freedom of speech in general needs to be seriously questioned... and the matter-of-fact way that most seem to be reacting to the abuses of power in dealing with a rare entity (Wikileaks) willing to furnish truth makes it extremely difficult for me to not believe that people are getting exactly what they deserve. It's as though people are willing to sell their soul to get the latest, newest piece of shit gadget- and somehow the urgent desire for an ipad or iphone will almost certainly outweigh Apple's role in the growing conspiracy to protect the criminal dealings of corporations and government. Most corporations get their revenue directly from business with consumers. Can't people begin to use their spending power as a voice? If we are two-thirds of the economy, why don't we just freeze that portion... at least the part that is not spent on local businesses? It's tough to inspire any movement out of a population that has been conditioned to be little more than a group of spectators.
If you own any computer you are partly responsible for damage to the environment. No-one is blame free. I'd happily give up all my gadgets for a life of sunshine, endless weed, good food, and women, and the opportunity to contribute to society through a hard honest days work, but not the kind of job that will either kill me or make me want to kill myself. Is that asking too much?
I'd say "little more than a group of blind consumers who worship technology and the $$$ more than their freedom..."
Never said I was... in fact I quite regularly allude to my own culpability in this. The computer is my only hope for getting un-propagandized information and a means for both sharing my view and reassessing it as other folks able and willing to actually THINK to furnish in one way or another another intelligent, thoughtful perspective apart from being kind enough to point out the inherent hypocrisy in my owning and using a computer... so I'll let that be one of the things I'll take a pass on for now. Yes- willfully blind though. I do like how you put it.
not if you get old computers for cheap [or free in my case] and keep them out of the landfill apart from the electricity used, but i carbon-swap the computer for not having a car or television :sunny:
You people have to spread these good comments out more, I just dont have the rep for them all... lol :2thumbsup:
sometimes [occasionally? rarely?] the technology gives you your freedom if it were not for computers i'd still be working at some job for some boss in some city some where my very first computer was acquired [27 years and i've never bought one new] so that i could turn my drunken buffoon punk rock band into a sharp and extremely weird solo act and this one allows me to live anywhere there's a post office within bicycle distance . . . edit to add that if i were ever to start growing food [overcome my fear of killing plants, laugh's on me] i'd pretty much need some kind of technology to do so with no land and a 4-month growing season
Of course you could just spend a few thou on some grow lights and then a few more thou on electricity and grow indoors... But then your carbon footprint would expand to the size of Alaska... I'm not sure how we got here from wikileaks...
I think they removed the app simply because they are afraid.. Like all corporations they are afraid we will find out the truth, find that smoking gun. The payoffs, the buying of government so they can make a profit. The knowledgeble blatent disregard they have for the enviroment. They are figuring something in those wikileak files will eventually lead back to them.
wasn't apple in trouble recently because of questionable raw materials sourcing? hmm...raw materials...afghanistan...nothing to see here folks, move along...
