New cables released by Wikileaks paint a picture of the US Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) as being involved in more than curtailing the flow of drugs around the world. Apparently the DEA is also involved in domestic political intrigues in third world countries that have nothing to do with drugs.

In Paraguay for instance, the DEA got pressured to help the government spy on domestic political enemies. It seems the DEA's ability to monitor all electronic communications in a country is in high demand to spy on dissidents and other enemies of political leaders.

Obviously this is beyond the mandate of the DEA, yet the DEA will dance to the tune of these corrupt government if it means they get what they want. The DEA also props up "friendly" governments even those with horrible human rights records.

Sounds about right to me!? Damn DEA has it in their best interests that drugs are availble in theUS so they have jobs and can secretly sell them to people and flood certain citys with drugs like crack in LA in the mid-80's to people they (DEA) consider not worth anyting but making money on anyway.

This is part of the reason the war on drugs rages on... They would need to revamp their whole set-up in order to have excuses to keep doing these things if drugs were legalized.
