You have to go back to about the mid-80s and earlier. The players in the pro leagues looked more like high school kids and relied more on finesse and gamesmanship. Today players have arms and legs like tree trunks and muscle their way through to the basket like a bowling ball going through the pins. .
Wrong! Wilt Chamberlin,Jerry West,Elgin Baylor ,etc, were not like high schoolers. 77' Blazers, champions that year, had Maurice Lucas-the enforcer,as have other teams had a very tough guy to take care of business if one of their team mates got pushed around or roughed up. Athletes are bigger and stronger now as is the general population, but B-ball players have always (since the 50s,at least) been big and pretty damn tough. If you want to see an excellant series ,get the 77 Blazer's playoff series with Bill Walton at center against Philly. I've been watching B-ball since the early 50s,so you're not sneaking this one by me.
Although,I agree about carrying the ball--it makes no sense to me the way they do it now. I stopped playing for a few years when the officials started allowing hand -checking. Fucked my finesse game up and I got in a few "incidents" when I slapped people's hands off me. They are finally calling fouls on hand-checking.
B-ball was supposed to be a non contact sport--it's never been that, but the game is rougher now and it's because the officials allow it.
Yeah. And there was also a time when players in general weren't as tall and didn't hang from the rim like an ape. A little more class decades ago. .
