It is made from isobutylene which is a byproduct of oil, natural gas and I believe it can be synthesized from a number of other different sources. It is a polymer and is made through a polymerization process. This is made in refinery type plant like everything made out of oil. It all involves extreme high heat, vacuum chambers, and processes called coking and cracking where crude oil is busted down into thinner olefins or aerosols or aerosols are compressed together it to thicker sludge's. Running gasoline through a cars ignition system is just another refining stage for fossil fuels. Adding polyisobutylene makes this process much more efficient. I don't believe that the byproduct of using PIB in gasoline holds any secret poison that will come back to bite us in the ass if a program is begun using it.
