I didnt want to derail the other thread, so started this one for this...

There are no two other countries in the world, that I know of, that are closer in almost every area, the Canada and the US...

The fact that we dont have open borders anymore is more then a little fucked up... but that is the way it is, and it wont be changing anytime soon. So....

Why are we running seperate border patrol units?

Why are there two checkpoints at the border?

Would it not make more sense to combine the two into a joint border security force? There are ten times the number of americans then there are canadians... but there are likely more canadians (proportionally speaking) that want to go visit the us then vice versa... So make teams that are 25% canadian and 75% american, split the costs that way for the combined buildings and crossings.

You could have more crossing opened and guarded with less hassle and bullshit for honest travelors, making it easier to spot people who are 'sneaking across' as everyone isnt going to be pissy and paranoid about crossing....

To jump sides again lol.... It's a really really long border... There are lots of places a determined person can get across...

I don't know how likely this sounds but there is the possibility of the 2 governments not trusting the other enough to keep the other's trouble-makers out of their own country..

Well, as odd as this may sound, I really think the internal politics should be taken out of security...

Seems that isn't likely to happen though, I do agree with you.

Should be, but, like you said, it's not too likely to happen. Especially when a country as paranoid as the US is concerned.
