The Politics of Friendship

If theres one thing I've noticed, its the fact that you can't always have politics and friendship, and keep the peace.


On too many occasions I have had very close personal friendships become suddenly very stiff over a political belief. This is something that happens on the forums all the time and something that happens to me with lots of people that I know and meet.

My cousin Ben and I used to be real close until he spent too much time listening to Rush Limbaugh under the influence of alcohal. Suddenly Ben starts spouting off this horrible right-wing news speak off at me and telling me how wonderful sweatshops are and when I disagree he explodes into an angry rant. Its very difficult to talk or hang with him without ending up in some sort of political discussion.

As a result, I try to stay out of too many of political discussions in here anymore so that my raging anti-Bush sentiments don't alienate too many people in here that I might already have a working friendship with.

While people may disagree politically, it doesn't mean we can't be civil and friendly with each other. (at times)

I rarely, if ever, discuss politics.

 

You know there are two things that my parents always warned us kids about and that is you dont talk politics and you dont talk religion. Still it is sad how stuff like this ruins some friendships. It seems rather stupid to me.

 

I made a political thread one time that got heated and I opted to never do that again. I even apologized on the thread for making the thread.

Something kinda like that happened today and it made me really think about it.

 

I'm not denying that.

I can honestly say I have never argued with anyone on here. I do not feel the desire too. I come here to chat and be among friends.

For me I tell the person the way they feel is their Right. I can respect that but in return I want my opinion respected. I don't expect anyone to agree with me but don't argue with me because you feel differently. Debaters do not like this approach very much.

 

Thats so true.

Whenever I would try to find common ground with him he would get really pissed and tell me to choose a side or I would get run over......
