My friend and I have decided to oreder a shroom-growing kit on line and see what we can do. How difficult is it to grow the shrooms? What strains are the best? How long does it take? What is the yield usualy like? What do you do to the shrooms before consumtion? Any advice is greatly apriciated!

What I would recommend is to go to a shroom growing forum. Read up all the teks you can and search up all you questions there, then start your process.
None of your questions are quantitative, so don't expect much of real solid answers. They are fairly easy to grow if you take in all info you can. They take different times, but I usually get my full harvest a little more than a month from starting. No strain is much different if you are talking cubensis, just order the most popular ones. Yield is very tough to give even a close answer, too many variables. Don't make it about yield and money, and you should be fine, especially about your first batch.

LMAO, i picture my 7 yearold cousin when reading this post, he asks questions the same way....

I'll give them numbers to make it easy.
    1. depends on your experience, its easy if you know what your doing, if you don't its hard.
    2. P. Cubenisis, try to stick with the more popular varieties, B+ and golden teacher are great.
    3. Colonization 2-3 weeks depending on amount of substrate your colonizing, Fruiting should then take about another week.
    4. Depends again on the amount of colonized substrate, but not only
    5. I usually sprinkle them with salt and pepper, but the normal thing to do is dry them.

If you get more specific with your questions you'll get more specific answers.

Those shroom kits are the biggest rip off...... $50 bucks for $10 worth of parts and materials.

I doesn't pay to be a lazy hippy...... for $100 work of stuff (including the PC and jars) you could grow a infinite about of mushrooms.

It is easy to type that but to actually put it into practice takes more effort than the average person is willing to put up.

Growing mushrooms can be an expensive or very affordable hobby and your experience / knowledge will help keep the price down.

There is nothing wrong with buying a mushroom kit to learn about the process, after that you can decide if you want to keep buying kits or you can use your experience to create your own system.

There is a new advertiser here www.mushbox.com and they have been around selling mushroom kits and everything else you need to create a custom built grow kit for over 10 years. Type in mushroom kit in any search engine and they will be number 1. Use code " hipforum " for 5$ off any order at Mushbox.

Another great resource for information other that the recommended forum above is Shroomtalk.com, it has tons of growing teks and experienced mycologists who can answer any question.

I will try and post some articles about growing mushrooms here as I do have some knowledge I can share. :sunny:

But to answer your original questions

How difficult is it to grow?

That depends on what strain you want to grow, and your level of experience. You should consider reading these basic articles they will help give you a basis of information to start from, then you can make an informed decision on what you need to get started.

The Mushroom Life Cycle. Just some basic info about how mushrooms reproduce.

What you need to grow mushrooms from home The simple starting details about growing mushrooms from home.

Liquid Cultures and Live Spawn This is some info about how you can start growing mushrooms and what you need.

The Casing Technique And this is a detailed walkthrough on growing mushrooms using a casing technique starting from colonized grain or another substrate.

    What strain is best?

I would recommend using an edible mushroom like oyster first, if you have success with that you can move up to others. If you want to start with magic mushrooms you should consider B+ or Golden Teacher cubensis strains as they are most popular and usually easiest to get started. You can get mushroom spores online from a variety of suppliers but Spores101.com has a guarantee for satisfaction and customer service.

    How long does it take?

It again depends on your experience and what type of mushroom you are going to grow. The most common magic mushrooms can be grown in less than 30-45 days if you start from spores. However if you start from spawn you can have mushrooms in a couple weeks.

    What is yeild like?

It depends on the strain and the environment used to grow. Factors like temperature and humidity will determine how much of a harvest you get and how big the mushrooms are. Usually from a Casing Kit like the one offered on Mushbox.com you can harvest a 1/4 pound per flush and get approx 1-3 flushes each kit, sometimes more.

What do you do to the shrooms before consumption?

Well not much.. if your growing edible mushrooms you can usually eat them right off the spawn or right out of the kit fresh. But in most cases you will want to use them with a recipe and cook them up into a sauce or use as topping on pizza or steak. YUM!

However if your growing magic mushrooms you can also eat them fresh right off the kit or spawn. There is no special preperation or necessary step to to before eating them. You can dry them if you want for long term storage or for easy grinding up into a powder. I would recommend drying them over a fan resting on a screen, or if you have it a food dehydrator will work fine. Don't microwave or oven dry them it will possibly damage the psilocybin inside making them less potent.

I would dry them until crisp, then grind up into a fine dust.

Then melt up a batch of your favorite chocolate and mix it up... Then pour into molds for fun special treats! Or just let it harden and break off chunks as you wish.

I hope that helps answer your questions. PM me anytime if you have a direct mushroom question. :sunny:
