Well I'm sticking with my own 2 years of experience growing successfully. And reserve the right to offer my personal opinion when people ask for it.
Have you grown any without bands though? To be fair, I have never tried using bands because a) it really just comes down to time b) they look silly and you have to find and take them all out before they get sucked in or turned to goo. I am of the opinion that they are at their best unneccesary. Have fun with that though.
The majority of my dreads don't have bands, I might have 5 or 6 at one time with bands on the roots. They just help in certain situations. I like to maintain my hair so they're roundish and distinct.
To be honest at the moment I don't have any dreads joining, in the past I had to rip a few apart which was a pain and must have done some damage. I try to avoid having to rip. I know I could just let the congos take over but I don't really want fatties this time round.
Only among some. There's cool skinheads who are as vegan and organic and tree hugging as any hippie... I mean, most of them ARE neo-nazi's, but... not always... I personally may be on guard if someone calls themselves a skin head, but there's also people trying to take away the negative connotation... like those of us who would like to reinforce the idea that hippies take drugs, grow their hair, AND affect positive change, instead of just talking about it.
Oh Wow ... the whole Nazi thing ... LOL Never got that whole left-wing skin thing, maybe it was to confuse the punx, not sure, all I know is a few years ago if you had a hawk and you bumped into a skin, someone was gonna get hurt; if you had one hair-do or the other, you represented one side or the other ... then the line got blurry ... Nationalist Punx in Manchester for example. unk:unk:unk:
I'd think anyone on here would be able to understand the concept of hair not affiliating you with any stereotype There are rastas with dreads and punks with mohawks and neo-nazis wish shaved heads. At the end of the day the term skinhead does pretty much just describe the way of wearing hair.
:iagree: ...but people should at least understand the commonly held connotations of words... This I why I prefer to ask people to elaborate when they use certain words. Instead of just telling them to use a different word. I don't correct every person who asks me about my 'dreads' because it would be a waste of time, however I will explain to people that matter to me that they're 'locks' not 'dreads.' Jah knows I'm no Ras :cheers2:
Well yeah exactly, and I call my dreads dreads or dreadlocks more often than I call them matted hair which is my preferred term Words iz just words...
because it was/is a name used to describe violent right wing extremists/neo nazis that shave their heads and we were working under the assumtion that you are using the term to describe just your hair. which is fine. continue using the term whether you're a neo nazi or not.
It IS just a term, but its a term that makes people think of a certain thing. When you say Skinhead here, you think Racist, negative, angry, aggressive racist, stupid fuck son of a bitch But i'm sure it means different things in different places
"the first skinheads were greatly influenced by West Indian (specifically Jamaican) rude boys and British mods, in terms of fashion, music and lifestyle.[1] Originally, the skinhead subculture was primarily based on those elements, not politics or race." skinhead's not negative, neo-nazi is
LOL, try telling that to these guys, they been battling against fascism since the beginning of the last centaury ... seriously doubt that wiki page referring specifically to a percentage of skinheads, involved in a youth music subculture is gonna hold any weight when it comes to the actual right wing identity of the other 99% of skinheads
