He said it was a Buddhist discipline. One of the Buddhist precepts is: I undertake to observe the rule to abstain from sensuous misconduct. Also possibly applying to this person is: I undertake to observe the rule to abstain from intoxicants as tending to cloud the mind.

Actually, if you put it out here on the Net, you should expect detractors. And it is in the Love & Sex Masturbation Forum. We get some pretty outrageous comments on here.

I didn't think Geriatric Delinquent was out of line (Tho he put a Christian spiritual motive in place of a Buddhist one). Rev said as much but more seriously. I just hope that when I get old I can have a kind of dry wit like Geriatric Delinquent. I would hope that his comments are welcome in a Free Speech Forum.

And OneLifeForm seems to be taking it in stride, eloquently fielding any detractors to his discipline or his posting about it.

BTW, I see this as just one of those experiments to test limits. I've done them. Tried celibacy for a few years and tried going without masturbating for a brief while. I lasted less than a week - my sexual fantasies got so weird it scared me.

Which most spiritual teachings advise that it would be better to just go ahead and take care of natural urges naturally - othewise you will always be preoccupied with that which you deny yourself.

I don't fault this young man his experiment and wonder how long he will persist. But, I hope he does not intend this as a serious path to enlightenment (unless he plans to live a life as a Buddhist monk, seriously on a lone path of renunciation).

 

Imagine the reception from the Generation In Rebellion, those arch practitioners in self-denial, when OneLifeForm takes the stage at Woodstock and announces:

You're placing a disproportionate amount of importance on one person's act (or lack thereof) to represent the value system of an entire subculture. I understand that you are using this for parody purposes. I'm surmising that you'd be more likely to equate so-called "hippie culture" with unbridled hedonism and a lack of self restraint and; respect your absolute right to be misinformed.

My perspective, Mr. Delinquent, is that of a freedom loving person... well, the concept of freedom anyway for you see, I live in the United States, where freedom only exists in patriotic songs and slogans-- as well as school indoctrination text manuals. I live amid a population whose chosen reality predisposes them to react very badly toward what the idiot box tells them is subversion which very effectively keeps a lid on frank and honest political discussion here... as well as discussion of stereotypes.

Deriding someone for not conforming to the lack of ethical restraints that YOU have determined they possess is not an acceptable exercise of your free speech and NEITHER is defending such nonsense. Civil discourse must involve preserving a welcoming environment for others. If you are not willing to offer this most basic consideration to the other members here then you are invited to post elsewhere.
