As a lot of you probably know tonight is the State of the Union. For those living elsewhere, what is the state of the union? Well it's essentially as it sounds. The president is constitutionally required to periodically give an update to congress on the current affairs and state of the union. The practice was discontinued by Jefferson who started just sending letters to congress, but revived by Wilson who once again began making speeches to the joint session. It's now become a huge affair and basically a campaign speech for the president in terms of what his goals for the next year are.

This year supposedly there's going to be a no standing rule, and the aisle between Democrats and Republicans has been taken away in an effort to tone down the rhetoric so to say. Some of you might remember the awesome "YOU LIE" outburst from a South Carolina congressman at least year's.

So what's in the future for Obama, well we'll find out later tonight, but so far it looks like he's going even more to the right.

I thought it was pretty decent. I have faith in his administration and their decisions, and that they are well informed as possible. A lot of people are saying it's our generation's sputnik moment...... I sort of agree. I am glad he addressed the fact that a lot of our setback has to do with a global field that has significantly changed and will change the level of American power. I am not so agreeable on his preaching, and attempt to motivate the American people to work towards making the United States the top world power again, even though it pretty much still is that. We certainly can change and make our country far more productive in a world of new ideas, but I think there was too much talk of competition between countries. And then he moves into a new area of talk, and addresses global cooperation towards a better world. I found it contradictory, and his earlier points almost hostile towards the rest of the world. Despite some logic mishaps and overly aggressive attitudes for my liking, much of it was very hopeful and specific enough to make practical and relevant sense. However, it still is far more thematic than a specific enough plan for progress. However much of what said, gave me hope, that this administration has the critical and progressive thinking power to develop a plan that could be successful.

Also, I assumed he was going to relate the Tuscon shooting to the political divide in the country, and that political groups are becoming far too extreme. However, he did not speak of it in that sense, avoiding what I think was a huge mistake and incorrect judgment of what happened and why, common to most media outlets, especially liberal. If you looked into Loughner's outlook enough like as it was investigated on 60 minutes you would discover, the motivation was so far from political, bordering existential crisis, and definitely nihilistic. Obama addressed it not as that, but that it should be a reminder that there is hope in living in America, and in my opinion, anywhere in the world.

    USA the top world power...

The US is indebted to where it makes its money and where most of its things come from. China, and some other countries overseas.

That's also the reason there was so much talk about competition between countries.

Did you even watch the whole address?

The deficit was one of the major themes, and the spending changes that are going to take place, but it was not connected to the talk about competition between countries all that much, especially because we won't ever totally climb out of the deficit, but we can pretty confidently operate with private investment, like most of our borrowed credit.

The talk of competition was more of an ego thing, that it was unacceptable that other countries are strengthening at a faster rate than the U.S. But on the other hand he spoke much about trade agreements and rearranging our system to work better with the world.

Don't know what your point is...defending Obama's contradictions even though you are anti-America?

No I did not. I saw a room fill up, largely full of grey haired white men shaking hands and smiling wearing $500 suits. Then a black guy came in, people stood and clapped like trained seals for a good 2-3 minutes. Then some rich, white, out of touch guy was announced the new speaker of the house, everyone stood and clapped. Said black guy addressed an empty seat, everyone stood and clapped. Then black guy spewed forth some rhetoric about sitting together today, working together tomorrow.

Then all of a sudden a feeling came over me and I quickly realised that I had broken the spell of lies and bullshit rhetoric coming from rich assholes whose lives, ideals, and laws are completely out of touch with the country of which they're in charge.

Then I went to my computer and listened to some Lynyrd Skynyrd.

    Here's my point;

Why does everyone always talk about the US's debt, it's on par with most other western nations, lower than quite a few. Our number is huge because our economy, population and annual spending is huge.

    I said indebted, not debt.

America is dependant on the tit of China, meaning you are indebted.

    in·debt·ed (n-dtd)
    adj.
Morally, socially, or legally obligated to another; beholden

If one is dependant upon, they are weaker than. Thus the USA is not quite the superpower, at least not the biggest, that it will have you all think it is.

China on the flip side is indebted to US consumer spending though, over 1/5 of Chinese exports go to the US alone.

Yes China exports more to us than we do to them, the Chinese government needs continuous massive growth through to keep dissent down and it's economy is export driven, exports to the US driven. Hell their next biggest export destination after the US is Hong Kong, which is the base of tons of internet companies whose products number 1 destination is also the US.
