We are not indebted to the Chinese state, but our economies are dependent upon each other.

What madcap said, I would rep but can't.

Thanks for that link too, very informative, but not very supportive of your opinion on indebtedness.

By the same theory were in the same amount indebtedness to Japan. The US and Japanese economy are very linked, we're very close military allies, and currently(though China's share of it is bound to keep on rising) China only owns slightly more US debt than Japan does.

And you'll make at least 1 person in the world who cares if you do it.

I watched the speech. It's an important tool for the person who has the function of leading the government, and representing it to the U.S. citizens.
That said, I thought it was formulaic and mediocre. I was disappointed because Obama is such a capable orator on the national stage. But he said basically the same things as the last several of them. One could just do a word cloud on the last half dozen SOTU speeches, and it would predict 90% of what the next one says.

They're really important, and can make spark tremendous participation by U.S. citizens. But that rarely happens unless the speech is given during times of unusually great crisis - world war, great depression, etc. The exception I can think of is JFK, who gave quite a quotable speech.
