Addressing that the War on Drugs has completely failed and that it is ruining the U.S. and Mexico is pretty important.

Who says anything about instigating change? This will BE the change if they don't stop this now. Just making an observation/prediction, that's all.

Obama will once again laugh off the marijuana question. If stoners could put together a rational argument as to why The War On Drugs is ill effective then maybe we might gain some ground. But until we stop acting like we're the only innocent criminals to the war on drugs, nothing will come of it.

Lack of cohesion isn't the issue.
There are plenty of intelligent, well-formed arguments on both sides. The problem is prejudices, paranoia, and false information.

Persecuted pot smokers will not make any major changes in America by causing mayhem and destruction. If you think that is a logical and effective course of action for legalization, I begin to wonder if you're delusional.

    No it hasn't.

Is that a possible solution for why drug use has gone down in Portugal? Yes, but is it proof that legalization lowers use? No.

Remember, correlation does not equal causation.

Indeed, remember after Nancy Reagan's Just Say No campaign despite the huge epidemic of crack/heroin violence and image glam bands put on, drug use in the later part of the 80's began to fall until the point in the early 90's drug use was among the lowest it had been since the mid 60's.

I asked a cannabis question and I voted for 55 cannabis questions. He'll probably either spew out some quick, vague rhetoric and move on, or just not address it whatsoever as I'm sure most politicians feel that it's just a waste of time.

I'm pretty sure it's not decriminalized if you are receiving a misdemeanor for possession.

Decriminalization means there are no criminal penalties for committing the crime. A misdemeanor is what small possession of marijuana is currently classified as, if it were decriminalized the only punishment would be a small fine.

    Traffic violations are decriminalized offenses.

That said, I do believe marijuana legalization would lead to a decreased use of other drugs such as crack.

The big O, as you call him, is doing his best! People don't really give a f..k if you're doing dope! They want a better health service and other priority needs, that folk like you distract the attention away from! Stop being so shallow and unstick your head from your arse!

    nvm i saw it.

dude fuck that, There is no way marijuana use is gonna shrink. its increasing and increasing by the year. More and more peopel are trying it, and can get it anytime and will get it anytime they want. Its just dumb to make it illegal, there is still a shit load of violence in gangs and drug cartels, and money spent on trying to stop them. Just stupid, just legalize it i mean its common sense.

If they should have any reason not to legalize it, I would think it would be this: once it will be legal, more peopel will be smoknig and people will smoking everywhere. America would just look liek a bunch of potheads because of the stereotypical view of marijuana that has been built up. other countries will just think we are more laid back and that everyone are stoners now. i think the government just doesnt want america's image to go down, and I can see that.

The question was from an officer from LEAP about general end of the drug war and prohibition. Obama says he doesn't support or see legalization as the answer but does think the current situation is up for debate and thinks we've been treating it too much as a legal problem and need to focus more on it being a public health problem, with possible drug courts, ect that could mandate treatment instead of a criminal sentence in an effort to reduce demand.
