Hitching has been my main method of transport for 3 years. Same with most of my friends whether theyre male or female. A lot less nonces and wierd fuckers over here though :D considering that our whole population is less than most US and UK cities :p

The only difference really is that girls get picked up quicker but having said that Ive never had to wait more than 20 minutes (in Ireland), Europe however, the longest we were waiting for was 3 hours.

I was one of those people who always said I'd NEVER hitchhike.

During a trip home from college in NY, my car's wheel bearing blew out in Brunswick, GA. (I was trying to get home to FL.) Back then (1990), no one had cell phones. I stood there on I-95 for what seemed like forever, before a large tractor-trailer hauling used cars stopped. When the driver got out, all I could think of was, "Holy shit! I've just met Satan himself!" The dude was toothless, greasy-haired, etc. However, my internal radar smoothed over my initial shocked reaction to this guy's appearance, and when asked if I needed a ride and where I needed to go, I told the guy if he could get me to Jacksonville, FL, I could handle it from there. I grabbed a few key items out of my vehicle (knife and pepper spray) and hid them in the pocket of my jacket. He was nice enough to load my POS Mazda onto his rig with the other vehicles, and off we went.

It was kinda cool riding in such a big rig, but after he commented about my "hot legs", I stuck my hand inside my jacket and kept a death grip on my knife, just in case. Other than that remark, he behaved himself and eventually got me to the big TA truck stop, where he unloaded my car and went on his merry way.

I called my family at the truck stop and told them to get in touch with AAA for me. Then I told them about my hitch hiking misadventure and received an epic lecture from my mother.

I don't go out of my way to pick up hitchers either. The only time I've done so is in areas where I can expect Appalachian Trail thru-hikers, and they've always been cool and especially appreciative.

way earlier i posted on here that hitching by yourself is dangerous..... but even that was dumb.... the only reason i said this was because i had never actually done it much on my own... after i worked up the courage to dump my bf and hitch on my own around america... my life has been totally beautiful. i do have a dog, and he is my baby... anyway, basically just like life, here is hithing.......---you will draw the kind of energy you want or need... you carry a gun out of fear, and your situation just may come to you.... you radiate love and light and good evergy, you will be blessed... either way though, always use your head... always listen to your instincts.... but do not be overwhelmed with fear... once fear takes over, there is no room for sound judgement...... i try to stay calm, and always trust myself

My brother had a friend who was female and hitched and she ended up getting picked up by a guy who cut off her arms and left her to bleed to death in a ditch. Luckily she survived.

Sorry, that it is a really said story, but it is the story that I know, and why I would never ever hitch a ride.

I do think it makes a big difference depending on the location in which one is hitchhiking. Like the incident I just posted about happened near LA I think, whereas I have never heard any horror stories about hitchhiking around where I live... but I am still too paranoid to do it.
