I always thought it was interesting how if a person is half white they go by what their other half is. Like mexican mixes call themselves mexicans. Same with black people and asians. Its almost as if anything taints the whiteness they are automatically not white.
My mexican-Irish friend goes by white. It all depends on the person, really; but most brown colored people are going to be referred to as black, while lighter colors may get labeled 'mixed'. And people don't get to choose their labels always.
Wow. The ignorance here is over-whelming. First of all, people will describe their ethnicities based on who asks it. For example, if a white person asks, I say that I'm half black. If a black person asks, I say that I'm half white. Secondly; Mexican is not an ethnicity or race. It is a nationality. A Mexican can be Hispanic, Aboriginal, black, white, or even Asian. Thirdly, many halfricans (half Africans) refer to themselves as black because Western countries are dominated by whites, and from their point of view, half black people look black. If I went to Africa, people would look at me and think "oh look, a white person."
To the OP It goes by the old way of thinking "One Drop"....if you have one drop of anything other than white then you have been tainted and in other words aren't white. Least that's how whites treated mulattoes during most of american history. However it mostly goes by how you look, if you look more black than white then most of the time that's what people identify with.
uke: The response is sickening to the point of becoming drab. Wish I didn't see this programmed response coming. Of course, I am "ignorant". Funny how you assume my ignorance in the same way I assumed what I did. Guess that means we are both ignorant. Anyways, the rest of the post makes sense. I know a few people who do that too. But the majority of them definitely go by what they are mixed with, wether it be in an almost totally black place or not for e.g. Duh... Mexico is a country, but alas there are lots of american born mexicans that claim to be "mexican". And, I didn't mention race... Plus, white and black are not races. Caucasian, african american, and hispanic are though. Which none of us mentioned..
I'm half hispanic, half white. I grew up in a small town with very little ethnic diversity, so I was always called hispanic. But when family on my mother's (hispanic) side come to visit or we go visit them, we're called white. I think it mostly goes by the predominant ethnicity.
I have a few Khmer/American friends who get some sort of racist comments from the locals. Salt and pepper or whatever. The worlds a dumb place.
African American, eh. I think you might find several black people live outside of America. A few in Africa I've heard.
I haven't experienced this. I have been to places where there are half black people around almost only black people, yet they called themselves black. Guess it just goes off of what you have experienced. Some people call me Sasquatch, even though its painfully obvious I am only half... No hair on my forehead or nose. Ignorance to the point of overwhelmingnessnessness
This is why you drop the American part, making them just African. African-American minus one American, you get just African.
That would be a little more apropos. But I've had lot of black friends and not a one of them objected to the label black. Nor is the term African American scientific label of race in anyway, it's kind of a mouthful of a PC label which many black friends I've had don't identify with. Not that we talk about it that much.
Sometimes on forms I identify as mixed ethnicity or other instead of white =P I'm Polish, German, French, and possibly Austrian -- how you gonna lump those all together? (Especially when Polish is so superior )
Have you ever had one of your half black friends object to him being white? I sure have, quite a few. Btw, I don't see how my statements earlier were unrelated? EDIT wow, now that I look the word apropos up I see there are two meanings. I have only heard of it in the abverb sense (even though that didn't look like an adverb, I considered it to be the same). But it means the exact opposite!! Weird...
Haha Caucasian. But now we are arguing semantics here. Caucasian doesn't include the french I wouldn't suppose, seeing how they are so far away from the Caucasus region. White
Damn, according to this map, they are all Caucasian. Whatever, I don't know that I believe in race anyways =P
:smilielol5: Seeeee? Haha, according to that map aficans are caucasian. This is a better map, but then again. How the fuck do they call us caucasian???? None of the countries I think of being caucasian are near there...
