Why do I find myself sometimes being inherently racist?

lunarverse, good points well made. I agree.

    I thought so.
That wasn't really my point but I've been told I'm actually kidding myself.
As a mixed race person I'm slightly worried about how my mind works.

I think I'm the same just a toned down version (minus the racial element).
It's only when I'm really wound up...it isn't always my first response.

You look like a mix of my girlfriend's brother and my girlfriend's brother-in-law.

Here's a weird one on the subject:
I often make fun of my girlfriend having black blood cause she's Italian. Sometimes she doesn't care, sometimes she finds it offensive =S

I dated a lebanese girl once. She used to make fun of her family all the time, everyday, calling them camel jockies and sand niggers.

One day we were out at a park and she brought up her family travelling somewhere for the weekend, she was going away with them. I made, what I intended to be an innocent joke, and said something along the lines of, "are you taking the train or camels?"

After a brief moment of silence she lit into me so badly I never mentioned anything about their ethnicity ever again. I don't know if she was offended because of if it was her family or because I'm white. She continued with the racial slurs however with no problem.

Ha, sometimes. It was more impressive when I was 19, but I still grin a little.

i make fun of my hispanic half all the time. i usually have no problem with people joking about it, but it's another thing in front of my family or when somebody takes it too far. yes, i know it's hypocritical. i can joke about hispanics and white people with my sisters and brothers and some friends, but i wouldn't in front of my parents, because my dad's white and my mom's hispanic. i'd piss one of them off somehow.

i'm a born american citizen, but my mother was born and raised in el salvador. she married my american father when he brought her to the states. i speak fluent spanish because she had a hard time learning english, so i speak to her and my siblings in spanish all the time. people hate it, and i've been told by some pretty hateful people that i should stop because it makes it seem like i'm talking about them. it's upsetting that so much anger can be aimed at someone simply speaking in a different language. my english has no trace of a spanish accent, so people don't assume. but i'm much more proficient with my english than a good portion of the "100%" white people.

Just to clarify, her family was not with us at the park, there's no way in hell I would have said that if they were.

I hear a lot of english people say that here, that when french people start talking in french, it seems rude or sneaky or whatever.

Don't let others make you feel bad because of their own insecurities, speaking spanish with your family preserves that side of your heritage and is not something one should be made to feel bad about. If people are that ignorant their opinion has no credibility anyways and shouldn't even be thought twice about.
