With all of this discussion over censoring sensitive or anger-prone speech and ideas of the internet and even radio by governments, one must wonder if the true sense of informative freedom and news generation is in danger because of these proposed strides toward centralization. The reason that this centralization is so potentially toxic and prohibitive to the self-expressive and innovative nature that the internet provides is because that power to control content would then be in the hands of only a few. A few hands that many don’t even trust with their healthcare or tax dollars for that matter. And we all know how that quote about absolute power goes… Organizations such as the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) essentially have the power to remove or reject domain names from existence if pressured enough by advisory groups of the government. ICANN’s organizational structure is comprised of many regional internet registries, but is also advised heavily by a Government Advisory Committee (GAC). So with all the talks about censoring “heated” political speech, stopping the boogeyman known as cyber terrorism, and an Identity Ecosystem ran by the Government; the pieces seem to be in place for ICANN to become a significant right hand tool used to do away with trouble makers on the internet. Further, how and who comes to categorize a trouble maker in cyberspace is where the real problems begin. They would become the “Idea Police”…
Okay, I'll bite. What is this "shadow internet" and how would it work? Are you talking about a completely new network? Sounds fascinating actually.
Not if we have any say over it. The internet is the ultimate in free speech because it consists entirely OF speech. There cannot and never should be any power to limit our expression. When the words 'internet crimes' starts to be used as much as 'terrorist' we will know we are going in the wrong direction, and shadow internet(s) will become necessary. I hope that doesn't ever become the reality.
A Shadow Internet would indeed be an entirely different system from our current internet infastructure. It would serve the purpose of escaping the eventual censorship and played-out marketing of big business and big government so that we can keep freedom of speech and expression alive...
as far as domain names go, you can always switch to machine numbers [or whatever they call stuff like 255.0.0.0] [shadow-free] unless, of course, those things are assigned - i'm weak on this shit . . .
I could see this happening or even already in place by someone else? Remember Qlink with commodore? It is possible, even as much sounds like matrix type of stuff. I am sure our kind government would be up for it! No matter what I say always keep in mind I wouldn't live in any other country in the world. However, I love my freedom. I just want some of the bs to stop trying to keep it that way. Confusing?
Some say thats why they are trying to rush this IPv6 crap so they can control much more about the net!
The numbers you are referring to are an IP address. Every website/domain has an IP address, and yes, they are assigned. All you have to do is a simple WhoIs query in order to find out their numerical IP address. The domain names are used simply because they are easier for human beings to remember. "Some say" is the term Fox News uses when they want to spout their opinion without quoting a reputable source. If you are going to make such statements, you should at least quote a reputable source. IPV6 is being rolled out because IPV4 is no longer capable of handling the sheer number of addresses in existence. They will run out within an estimated 6 months time. That is why it is being rushed. There is plenty of information out there about IPV6. It isn't some dark secret. I hope that I didn't come across as rude or condescending, as that certainly wasn't my intention. If any of you have fears concerning this type of thing, I would recommend going to a reputable tech community, and ask someone who has been in the business for decades, rather than spreading baseless rumors.
I've been thinking about this; Escaping the increasing over policing, ad pollution, data mining and tracking of the current internet. I think a sub web of interconnected encrypted VPN's will emerge and privately already exist among some. A Serure Socket Sub layer, HTTPSS encrypted browser perhaps... fully encrypted, fully anonymous browsing of unpoliced, un-analytic sub-sites without the need for proxy or HOPEFULLY ANY extra subscription services.
reading about things like this makes me wish i knew more about how the internet works. maybe it's time for a trip to the library.
If someone started an underground internet, all it would take is one connection to the BIG internet, and the undergroundness of it is compromised.
I never understood why the internet can't simply be consumer owned computers. I mean what if all the internet was, was individual computers owned by individuals in their homes. I do understand that in such a scenario you wouldn't have the commercial benefits like search engine companies w/ massive computing power searching the entire web in a matter of seconds, a la Google (BTW, google, thanks for helping me find this forum). But something about the whole thing really makes me feel like commerce has injected themselves in this whole thing as middle men and basically, monetized the web.
I'll say "Yes" to the OP's question, but theres a But attached to it. It will be developed and implemented by the same authorities doing the censoring and pushing for regulations / closer monitoring on the existing system,,,so they can be sure to keep an eye on those who apparently REALLY dont want them to know whats on their minds. Much like I'm sure they have enough info on people as it is now with current forms of encrypting data to lock another 25% of the population up, yet they dont because it wouldn't serve their greater purpose or agendas, whatever they may or may not be. Think of it as the starting point of the path to Room 101. :cheers2: http://www.digitaltrends.com/international/japanese-scientists-creates-meat-out-of-feces/
