Yeah, I've always thought Jimmy was good for the world even though he is not good for causes like nationalism.

Carter got real with America, went on TV and told us we were using too much energy and needed to cut back.

    America didn't like real.

People critisized him when the interest rates went to 18% during his term ,most not knowing the Federal reserve was an independant agency over which Carter had no control. I say most, because some right-wingers blamed him for the rates. I say it was done on purpose to discredit him, which would fall into the catagory of the usual republican dirty tricks. Can't prove it,but it sounds about right to me.

Actually, as his term went on, he faced increasing opposition from his own party, including those of the far left. He barely won the primaries in order to run for president again.

Carter is a very intelligent man, but that does not always make for a good leader. A few of his policies were brilliant, but many were not. At least the presidency gave him the opportunity to do what he does best, and that is promote peacekeeping and humanitarian efforts around the world. He has probably been the most successful ex-president of them all.

Interesting. I don't remember that. Was he too conservative for those in his party that lost interest in him?

"In a nation that was proud of hard-work, strong families, close knit communities, and our faith in God. Too many of us now tend to worship self-indulgence and consumption. Human identity is no longer defined by what one does, but what one owns. But we have discovered that owning things and consuming things does not satisfy our longing for meaning. We've learned that piling up material goods cannot fill the emptiness of lives which have no confidence or purpose. The symptoms of this crisis of the American spirit are all around us. For the first time in the history of this country believe that the next five years will be worse than the last five years. Two-thirds of our people do not even vote."
    -James Earl Carter

Boy did I fall in love with him after I heard that speech. Shit is mad eerie to listen to! Watching a video from the late 70s warning us about many of the things going wrong today.

He was an underrated president and a good man. I wish we had more like him.

He pretty much fucking called it and nobody wanted to listen. You could give the same speech today and it would still apply.
