All that seems to be for legal public nudity is nude beaches. Ok that's nice, but how about hiking trails that are designated for nude hiking? You don't see any of those. You can only get away with it if the trail is rural enough that traffic is minimal. But I'd like to see clothing-optional trails. Make sure that people know that they might see nude hikers if they hike a certain trail.
That's a very good point. For a long time I too have observed it's just nude beaches or resorts. There's much more to life than a beach or a resort! Active in the outdoors from a very young age, bushwalking nude, including overnight walks, helped me redress the profoundly limited options as to what I could do nude. I am not alone. Four friends and myself will be heading off this weekend on a naked overnight walk through rainforest visiting three waterfalls. The only hassle we have to deal with is mosquitos at dusk and around dawn. Possibly rain this time, too. If all you guys on HIP Forum weren't so far away I'd be inviting you on these walks so you can experience liberation at grassroots level: walking, photography, drawing, painting, camping, preparing meals etc., all totally naked. These walks I do are into areas of old timbercutting, following tracks (sometimes littered with snakes) that were once used to haul timber by horse and capstan. Some years ago people in Australia published a website pointing out where people can walk nude. But then came the idiots who found out and these twats often turned up in the cars or on motorbikes to raise hell, pestering nudists or calling the police (who have better things to do than play chasey with nudists through the scrub). So the website disappeared but some of the venues are still used as known nude hiking places but with no more off the riff-raff that spoiled early attempts. I don't publish details of where we go, though it is in a National Park.
I guess you can get away with it in Australia... Are these rainforests specifically clothing-optional? To answer your questions, I have yet to go to a truly nude beach or resort, but in Northern California, there are some naturist hangout away from the beaches and near lakes and rivers. Thats where I was first introduced to true naturism...my friend owns a home on the mountains and we got to hang out nude in her backyard...no neighbors...flanked by mountains and forests...she asked what i wanted to do and i mentioned hiking...she took me down a small trail she uses to head towards a quiet little creek. The only problem was that we had to cross someone's backyard...I toughed it out and we left in the nude wearing only shoes and our backpacks...it was up a small little hill but we got there and made it back and forth without wearing clothes one time. She also took me to a place near the American River where it is a pretty well known hangout...we drove nude, parked our car and hiked it to the river, where there were numerous other nudists. We didn't hike, but there were definitely some places we could have. This last weekend, i went to a lake here in NC that has a lesser-known nude area...I got to hang out there and I met this couple that showed me a small trail I could use...good times. I agree...I like beaches but I would like to do other outdoor activities in the nude. Those waterfalls sound nice...
We can get away with most things in remote areas in Australia, yes. We drive clothed or just Speedos on, to the ribboned post by the side of the road where we park the cars, and after that, it's threads off, usually in an hilarious mad hurry to see who can get it all off the quickest! Often a t-shirt of singlet is worn due to pressure/rubbing on backs from rucksacks, and maybe a lambswool 'muff' around the waistbelt to prevent redness and soreness there. And boots! Y'all don't look the part of the bushie if you're not wearing dem boots! A rainforest has few tracks (certainly not any vehicle tracks!), lots of vines (but no Tarzans...), nasty sword-grass (Free Willy will be no more if swiped by these native grasses), moss and lichen, low light (when overcast), beautiful aromas, strange sounds, even stranger sights... why should it not be "specifically clothing optional" when we are the only people to have gone on the trails since our last visit? We make it so. Bloody marvellous. Camping close to a photogenic waterfall is a true delight, if a tad noisy. Photographing these from any which angle we can (or paint, draw) is enough to wear each of us down and we then prepare dinner and wait for darkness, then...bed...zzzzzzz.
Sounds ideal. I love hanging out in the nude, I just wish i knew more people who shared my views. I have my friend in CA, but over here noone. I would love to go to a resort, but would feel like I would be bringing too much heat on myself if I went just by myself, a single guy. Me and my friend plan on going to more places when I visit next time...maybe even a resort. I wish I would have known earlier...
If you wish you knew more people who share your views you should of course visit a nudist resort where you feel comfortable. Like any place, each one has its own personality and policies. But don't be put off imagining trouble where there is none, just go and enjoy. There is an entire web forum dedicated to hiking naked called hikingnaked.com Although I'm more interested in just going out and doing it than discussing it. Once you figure out the essentials there's not so much to discuss and like the Aussie found out, the more you publish these places online the more they attract people who have no interest in enjoying them for what they are.
i know that on the Appalachian Trail, it is a tradition to hike nude on the first day of spring. im sure a lot of people take advantage of that that are hiking the trail
hardboy, I agree with what you say. I/we (our group) does not publish where we actually walk, nor can we be found given we leave no trace of our passage. Mentioning Appalachian Trail will have gawkers gathering to garner and goobie or two; avoid opening publishing naked hiking places. Dear me. Don't put it in print. Speaking of naked hiking, our weekend overnight walk was thrilling and another marvellously indulgent exercise in total liberation. We walked 7.6km naked, enduring two showers and a few baby leeches. Tents up on a flat grassy 'stage' close to a waterfall (thundering away from heavy rain, so didn't get too close). Sunday morning we showered under a subsidiary waterfall (helps quell the boners...), then a 10.4km walk through unexpectedly thick regrowth slowed us down, with another brief drenching from the heavens adding excitement. Ferns and tree branches brushing against the free bits caused predictable 'amusement'. Bloody marvellous. Our next walk in next week. Who's on board!?
