I have spent a fair amount of time in Canada and Germany and it is clear when they talk about "Americans" they are talking about people from the States. I think it is just one of those idioms that things/people from the US are called Americans and everything else from these two continents has some other descriptor. "Americans" is understood by everyone, so that's what we might as well use.
I really could care less how other nations View The USA. Worldwide opinions are colored by envy, and unease with the US security apparatus. No problem that others are into thier own nationalism and culture. Americans should not expect to change worldwide opinions by any change in behavior. Perceptions of the US are permanently fixed, often exposing more about the haters than anything about the the US. It was best said in the movie: My Big Fat Greek Wedding, when her immigrant-Father was speaking with the potential groom about his careeer in philosopy and said " My people were inventing philosopy when your ancestors were living in skins" :biggrinjester:
I'd say it's got a pretty bad image, the stereotype for Americans is that they are overweight, stupid and trigger happy. Like I say though, this is only the stereotype, for me personally, I'd love to go to America.
okay, I am an alaskan and i see a bit of canada myself and while the canadian stereotype is different from the USAs but their people, cities, cars etc are exactly the same and no matter how much you try to deny it Chronictom you are one of us
Disrepect to other countries, ignorance. Like, so many american kids I know assume all asians are from china or all latinos are from mexico. When that's not always the case
it's sort of a classic, sorry, short and snappy couldn't see myself holding a television [no think, just type]
I have family in Italy...they say that Europe sees America as a joke. They see us as too serious and work-happy. My uncle tells me all the time that Americans need to let loose and have a good time. He also thinks American women are cheap and easy haha
a guy i work with who is from italy said that Americans do work to hard and dont have much of a life outside of work because were always working
After traveling around the majority of the world, and seeing their countries, the US seems like a floating turd. The majority of the people are ok, but the government makes some of us absolutely shallow and annoying.
