I come across a lot of people that are sort of "Anti-Phish." I like em, I've heard about the crowd that runs with em, and why people stereotype against it, I guess... I can agree with it, but I don't think it's Phish's phault that some people are irresponsible and bring dangerous things to the party. Personally, I like em. They're a pretty unique band with all kinds of crazy progressive rhythm, and they kind of remind me of Radiohead, after I saw this little video of them creating certain songs. They actually used a box of rocks to stomp on for one of the sounds in their songs... can't say which one in particular, since the video was about a few different songs I think... But it was pretty cool. They were in their studio, I'm guessing in Hawaii? Maybe California? But, they were in their studio and, in the middle of recording they had to evacuate because of a volcano eruption! They packed up everything in the house and cruised down the road a ways, stayed at a hotel I think... It was nuts! Then, back to the studio they went, like "Back on the track! We gotta finish this shyt!"

What do you think of Phish?

I just had a craving to listen to em today. Looked em up on Youtube and figured, "hey, I want to listen to Phish! I haven't listened to them for a MINUTE!"

question, did you read the six gazillion threads about Phish/Trey before posting? (not to say there's anything wrong with a new take on a discussion)
They can be...ah.... lively, and will give you loads of insight to the lovers/haters split.
This would be true for any band: dead, Umphrees McGee, Ratdog, DSO, Ramones, Van Halen, pick your rapper or dj, etc.

I especially reccomend threads from the hiatus. Oh boy do they get passionate!

and to answer, I have a Phish is OK take. I have heard innovation, and they make people happy, and happy is wonderful. But I have been bored to sleep sometimes.
I also saw my "last" LoS show 13 times, so it can be night-subjective. And it is merely opinion. The nights I was nodding, others were ecstatic, and nights I liked, there were picky heads picking it to shreds.
That's improvisation- the moment is and then is not.

It IS hard to divorce the circus parking lot from the entity they follow. And I will withhold comments on "scenes" except to say that within is without many times.
(my comments on scenes are many around here)
Welcome to the boards, and keep posting thoughtful posts!

I didn't know if there was much fan discussion of any band on HipForums, but Phish is a band I really appreciate whether or not I can say they are one of my favorite, because the first time seeing them in 2010 was the massive show, and I got a lot of jam shows. Although performances vary when they are being creative and clever, reaching new heights of musical improvisation.

alot of things phish dosent get credited enough for is the fact the are a 4man act.

i mean, the dead has 2 drummers, 2 guitars, a bass, and keyboard.
    allman bros do.
    widespread panic.

most alot of jam bands have 2 drummers. 2 guitars.

    not phish tho.

    1 guitar
    1 keyboard
    1 bass
    1 drum

    and a fuckload of sound.

the amount of sound phish puts out. is on par with jambands with more members. which makes phish amazing.

    floes, that's an interesting take.
I could counter, for the sake of a discussion, that Phish came of age in a more technical world, so the various tricks of the sound engineer trade were always at their disposal (once they could afford gear, of course).
And the dead has not always had two drummers, and to the band's detriment.
    Hart left for a while.
SCI started as one keyboard player, one guitarist, one bassist, one mando/violin player, one percussionist who held down a kit and the world percussion.
    Jason came late.

yea actually theres lots of people that like phish and are not into the dead at all
i like the dead better but i love phish as well

    edit:
besides, the music is completely different in my opinion the only reason you can compare them is because they are the 2 most popular 'jam bands' of all time

exactly! the dead and Phish are so different in almost every aspect musically. just because you like one doesnt mean your gonna like the other.

Me personally, I'm most definatly a Phish head. I like the Dead, i wont turn it off if someone is playing them, and i diddnt miss the Dead at rothbury or Furthur at all good, but overall I think the Dead are just okay. I have mad respect for them, but their music just doesnt do it for me.

Phish on the other hand has been a constant source of obsession for the last 6 years of my life. I love their goofy sense of humor. The band has fun with their shows. How many other bands ride through the crowd on a hot dog, play a chess game against the crowd, play the vacuum, etc. Phish shows are by far the most fun shows ive been too.

Musically, Phish will send chills of joy up my spine. Ill be driving down the road and ill be listening to one of their shows and i just cant help but smile. No matter how bad of a mood I'm in Phish will change it (usually).

I'm gonna stop there cause I could go on forever about them. But I got over 4 weeks worth of phish music so if anyone wants to trade any message me!:2thumbsup:

I am in full agreement with drumminmama.

I personally don't care for Phish, they put me to sleep like mam was saying. Now I bet theres a couple Phish shows that are dynamite, and I'm not saying they are a bad band because they bring a lot of joy and excitement to the jam scene.. Fact is, they are just guitar, bass, drums, and keyboards. Thats awfully vanilla for my personal tastes, and there is only so much you can do with that instrumentation. i like stuff that has exotic and unique sounds/instruments involved.

I never really liked Grateful Dead either (i know, i know...) so maybe that has something to do with it.

when it comes to music, my opinion is the only one that I refer to. I feel like most people just go along with what people are playing/saying is good. They really don't explore music in a true fashion, they just get all their music from friends. And we all know all too well, music tastes differ from person to person. If someone says "this band is awesome" I am not going to agree with them until I listen to it too. I don't care how many people like Phish, just because they are popular doesn't make them good in my eyes.

Having said that, I really enjoy Mike Gordon with Leo Kottke. Trey on the other hand just sounds like a big long guitar solo to me, which I can get from just about any Jam Band.

Good points, but I doubt you've explored Phish in true fashion. If someone doesn't like something at first they don't listen to it any further. I don't expect you did that for no reason?

    1. I do love both the grateful dead and phish, though lately have had a slight lean towards phish, possibly due to the fact that they are still composing or were??
    2. the bands do have very different sounds.. iv always thought phish to have an overall cleaner sound
    3. I think phish having fewer members may actually lend phish to being "tighter" in a way

I agree, Phish kind of puts me to sleep sometimes. It just depends on the album/show. Some studio albums are really chillaxed and then all of a sudden you get a song that's just pure madness! I like "The Siket Disc." Pretty sweet jams, really chill and far out-like. "Round Room" just blows my mind. I love the songs, but they trail on too long and are a little repetitive. I was listening to it the other day and had to turn it off cuz I just couldn't handle it lol.

I'm still diggin on the Dead tho. Probably always will. There's just so much live material on the net! It would take a couple years just to listen to all their live sets. Incredible! I don't know how they do it... but they do it better than anyone. (When it comes to full-out live jams and compiled material)

    Grateful Dead > Phish
    IMO

the grateful dead have an organic feel that I enjoy.
phish is like ADD music on crack... all over the place, random, they just can't hold a groove like the grateful dead could. I respect phish, and even enjoy some of their shows, but GD is where its at.
