Saying someone is fucked in the head for laughing was my first response and perhaps a little too harsh. Something about the event bothered the OP enough to post about it even if he says he laughed about it.

I myself have been guilty of inappropriate laughter at the sight of certain suffering or tragedy. I think it might be a nervous response or self preservation/survival instinct. We can't dwell on all the tragedy and suffering in this world or we would never function, we'd all go stark raving insane. We've got to let go and detach to some extent to survive and carry on.

I didn't DO anything. In fact, I was the ONLY one who spoke up and complained about stuff that was going on and was harrassed out of a job because of it, but that's a whole other story for another day.

The MEANEST people I know were all hysterical and sobbing about 9/11 and the whole dramatic nine yards. So what?

Unless you're a vegan do you get emotional everytime you eat a hamburger. Do you have any idea how much the cow suffered while it was being slaughtered? Cows are sentient beings.

The guy I talked about upthread who beat his mother up won't eat cows because he thinks they're bad for his health. If no one ate beef, eventually we'd stop slaughtering the cows. He doesn't care about the cows but so what?

Side note: It's interesting that it is being assumed here that I'm a male.

I cried when it happened, but only because my grandma was going to be flying in for the holidays and I knew that it meant the airlines would all be fucked

But I still don't care, and I wish people would get the fuck over it already

It's called a lack of human empathy, it's not like people with this problem can force empathy upon themselves.

I lack empathy. In may of this year my cousin was brutally murdered, I felt nothing and did not really care, I still don't.
This really concerns me though how can I not have a basic human emotion and I hope it comes back.
My therapist gave me no tips on how to fix this this problem so maybe there is none.

I love the gray stripe down the center of his beard, reminds me of how my dad's mustache and beard are completely split down the middle - one side is the normal color and the other side is totally gray

Empathy and humility are worthy traits to have in a person, yet not every person needs them, and nor do they need to be made to learn them. Could anyone imagine someone like General George Patton sitting down and having a nice heart to heart with the Germans? For that matter would I ever want the man to have done something like that? Umm.. no.. I'll send in Oprah if someone needs a big hug, right after I kick her fatass for being a Dr. Phil supporter. Each of us by design are individuals and we are each owed the opprotunity to decide what personality traits that are best for us. Most of us don't do this as a concious thought, but more so over a prolonged period of time as a result of living life.

Bollocks. A nurse/doctor/paramedic wouldn't be in their job role if they had no empathy; they wouldn't even graduate. Not only would I be struck off if I acted like that, I wouldn't qualify for that job role in the first place.

Funny?! Fuck off! It's one thing you saying you didn't feel anything for those people but when you say it's funny? That makes you sick.

Completely different. The British didn't think 7/7 was funny! Nor did they want to disrespect those who were murdered. Britain was basically saying 'fuck you, you cunts'. It was also about showing that the British aren't scared and they refuse to be patronised. We weren't in mourning, doesn't mean the British don't give a fuck.

When someone kicks you do the ground do you roll around in pain crying or do you quit being a pussy and just get back up?

actually, most laugh as a coping mechanism... sorry dolly, it's true... they do laugh... my uncle eric was a surgeon of some kind... he told me some pretty awful stuff... he told me it helped them cope... i think he eventually became desensitized too...

i kind of understand the op. i mean, bad things happen - they happen every day. we choose to acknowledge some of it based around what gets television coverage.

i remember the day i stopped caring. it was around the time madeleine mccain was taken. the media went nuts about it because she was a pretty little thing. the worlds press went loco

some fatter girl gets kidnapped, no one really cares.

i am saddened by much news, but always remind myself of a larger perspective of thinking - shit happens. the twin towers was a terrible event, it effected a lot of people, but ultimately it didn't effect me so i cannot relate and there's no shame in admitting that.

if i miss a bus, does anybody else really care?

has anybody, ever, said 'i know how you feel', when they absolutely do not

i find it deeply condescending, and usually get quite frustrated when people start flinging that stuff my way.

it would be interesting to see what many of these families had to say about the world grief thereafter.

not condoning anything here, just make an interesting point.

I know for a fact I'm a bit of a sociopath.. sometimes I laugh when I see people get beat up.. or when I see someone in lots of trouble.

I'm a very caring person I just don't know why I do that shit..

Even though I try hard not to laugh I just can't help it..
