Killing for vanity is certainly an atrocity. But there are animals far more worthy of your attention than seals, which are nowhere near extinction.

Commercial fishing and particularly the whaling and sharkfinning industries are wiping out life as we know it in the oceans, and populations of these impressive creatures are rapidly declining, with many sharks on a clear path to extinction. The most conservative estimates are that there will be no more fish in 60 years, and that's assuming commercial fishing doesn't expand beyond its already monstrous harvesting ability.

The endless demand for profit is ruining the biodiversity of the world and it's important we stop raping the oceans.

And who says fish aren't cute?

It's virtually impossible to outfish all the fish in the world. IMPOSSIBLE

Actually, it is very possible. It's not just fishing, but the pollution that we are putting into the oceans.

Cod off the coast of Newfoundland began to dwindle a few decades ago, but the seal population still has stable numbers.

Do you guys know what seals eat?

    Cod fish.

The seal hunt is necessary in order to not make the North Atlantic cod endangered. If that happens, more seals will be killed off than the ones who die in the hunt.

Also, the seal hunt isn't only for fur. Plenty of people here eat seal.

This past year, there were a lot of shark sightings in New England. In response to that, authorities found it necessary to start killing seals at the seal pods off Cape Cod. There were huge debates over it and tons of people were getting involved...

In my honest opinion, people should leave wildlife alone.

Think how much better a place the world could be if people like the OP worried about things that actually matter.

    I think fish are cute.

And I care a lot about farm animals. I don't suppourt the farms where they're raised to be eaten, I'm a vegetarian. BUT killing an animal for its meat and killing it just for rich bitches to wear its fur, are completlet different things

They euthanize 90% of the animals they 'rescue', despite being against euthanasia. They barely even search for homes for the animals they take into care. They've killed over 22,000 animals over the years.
They support domestic terrorists like the Animal Liberation Front, and have given money to fire bombers.
They are against using animals for medical research and medicine, yet one of their board members takes insulin They make things like this, and distribute it to children:

    Peta are essentially funding terrorism.

Also, I've read that "Your Daddy Kills Animals!" comic online a little while ago. It was pure propaganda.

...but the point they're making (misplaced nationalism aside) is that America and Americans don't have a horse in the race.

You say "save the seals" but what I hear is "starve a Newfie".

...at any rate, I find the drama about the seal hunt overblown in a culture that treats veal as a delicacy. And I have no empathy for seals - I've shot a few in my time (although they are smart and hard to shoot).

    Definitely.

I don't agree with the killing of an animal for whatever reason, but I am more accepting of hunting for meat than for killing them to wear them as a coat, or to carry them around as a bag.

You can insert whatever cruel farm practice you want in its place. Breeding turkeys so big they can't breed without help, feeding cattle other cows, packing as many chickens as possible into the smallest cages imaginable. If you are a vegetarian, you still use thousands of products where the end result is dead animals (ie:the toilet paper your asshole loves so much comes from a clear cut somewhere)

The point, which maybe wasn't stated very eloquently, was that as a people our practices are incredibly cruel to animals. I just don't see what makes this case special.

I'm the third generation to have worked on my families trapline. If you think the issue is as simple as "meat is morally better than fur", you might want to give it some deeper thought.
