Long ago when I was in high school in Massachusetts some of us kids in the neighborhood converted an abandoned root cellar into a place where we could go get high during the winter. Before refrigeration, root cellars were used to keep carrots, turnips, beets, parsnips, potatoes, and other root vegetables fresh through the winter months. The old house on the property was deserted and eventually burned down, leaving only the rubble from the house and the root cellar, which was in fairly rough shape, the door was gone and wooden boxes littered the floor. We cleaned it up a little and found a sheet of plywood to place in front of the doorway whenever we were inside, and we kept a candle in it for light. We named it the bunker since it sounded cooler than calling it the root cellar. It really came in handy during those cold winter days & nights when the wind was blowing. We’d go inside and smoke a couple joints, a little warmer and out of the wind where no one could see or hear us. Eventually we all got our drivers licenses and drove around getting high, and so the bunker was abandoned once again. Years later the property was finally sold to a business and the bunker was dug up, filled in and paved over. Just a fond memory from my youth I thought I’d share.
That was beautiful. I don't know how, but it was. Its weird how people talk about fond memories in such a delicate and well thought out way. I feel like that could have been one of my memories I miss being a kid
my buddy and i used to get drunk in the bomb shelter in his basement. it was really just this room with multiple layers of cinder blocks as walls. christmas tree lights, two chairs, and a cd player were all we had. my other buddies and i used to get high in a broken down pontiac next to his garage. clam bakin' the pontiac. at one point we had a four tubed hookah in there
I searched Google images for root cellars and this is the closest I came to what the bunker looked like, minus the bay door and more decrepit.
Thanks for sharing. A very nice story. Made me think of this, and how I love the idea of having one of these. Especially to smoke weed in. http://www.missilebases.com/adironback
here's how the bomb shelter was structured http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl...blgfwwqX9Bg&page=1&ndsp=22&ved=1t:429,r:7,s:0
Thanks guys, but the bunker wasn't a bomb shelter or even a real bunker, it was a root cellar and inside it looked something like this: Wouldn't be much protection when the bombs started dropping! .
I live in an area that is dotted with old concrete WWII bunkers perchd on top of cliff-faces outlooking the ocean and had inter connecting tunnels between them, when I was 16-18 we used to drink at them every weekend. they are so awsome to hang out in, could make fires out of driftwood from the beach and just sit on top of and gaze accross at the city, had so many good nights there. I need to revisit those places.
