Well, I've been wanting to grow my hair out for dreads for a while now, but because of various reasons I had to get my hair cut before I could get anything done. Anyways, I've been growing out my hair and it's to a little bit more than 3 inches. This isn't very long, and I was going to grow it longer before getting dreads. But then I thought that I should start them now, and have them grow out with the dreads so they lock up while they are getting longer. I don't know if this is a good idea or not. I would probably do it the backcombing method, and I would not use wax. My hair is naturally curly and somewhat nappy. So what do you guys think?
If you're just going to cut them off when you need a job or when someone tells you to, there's no point in getting them at all
Hair grows faster than dreads do. Let you hair get longer, then do the dreads. Plus short hair doesn't really dread as well as longer hair
If you want to grow some locks it's pretty simple... Don't: comb or condition Do: keep you hair clean and be patient If you want to get 'dreads' first pray to jah marley then go at it with a fleacomb while singing 'every little ting gwan be aright'
I didn't think people on a site called "Hip Forums" would be so hostile. But whatever. Sorry I didn't use the more proper term 'locks', but you must understand, I have only seen one person in my life with actual dreadlocks. So as far as being in the in-crowd of dreadlocks with all the proper slang, I have not had the opportunity. So please, forgive me. But, I digress. As far as keeping the locks, I would. I would go through the work of having to maintain them, especially short ones. I will not be in any position to have a job that would require me to cut them, and really there wold be no reason for me to cut them. The question simply was: Should I get locks while my hair is short, or should I wait until I grow it out then put my hair in locks. I didn't know if there was an advantage for starting them early or not.
shorter hair will not knot as fast as longer hair. there is no exact length that is right for everyone. i think the hostility comes from (not that it's excusable) the statement that you made about trying to grow out your hair many times, but having to cut it in the end. us dreadiefolk like commitment. the question is, are you willing to commit? or do you want something more isntant and temporary?
1) If you think this thread is hostile, you'd better not look at the other threads And we answered your questions, just about. 2) We don't use "dread" slang"... 3) You don't have to maintain dreads, long or short. 4) Answer: Grow your hair longer, cus long hair dreads better than short hair, and you'll start off with longer dreads.
everyone who creates a thread like this gets flamed, mainly because they pop up every week, nobody reads the stickies and for regulars its extremely annoying saying the same thing over and over, in fact this is the second thread today that i have said this very thing in. Read the stickies, expect some friendly flaming, we will help of course but get used to it, im sure your friends give you shit over every detail of your life, its no different here. Welcome to the club
there's a club?!? Never get told about nothin. And this person, no offense op I'm just jealous of you "getting into clubs" skills, and they just get automatic membership. I see how it is.
Alright, sounds good. And I did read the stickies, but nothing really said whether or not there would be an advantage to starting off with short hair. And I know hostile threads, I've been around the web :afro:. But thanks for the responses.

@ the OP... Do you have some pics of what your current length is? If yes then post some so that the peeps on HF can give you a better; more accurate response. PS: Good Luck with your dread journey. I'd give it a go and say that you should maybe stop using conditioner from now on. Also, try "training" your scalp now already by not washing your hair as frequently as you currently do. Example: if you are currently washing you hair every day. The start by washing your hair every 2nd day for a week. Thereafter, every 3rd day for a week. Thereafter, every 4th day for a week. thereafter every 5th day for a week. etc. etc. At least this way you'll have something to keep you mind off "watching your hair grow" :afro: I know it's like watching grass grow when you're growing your hair out at first. This way you have a little experiment to keep you busy in the meantime so that by the time you finally do start dreading, your scalp will already be "trained" and this could eliminate the itchy scalp (somewhat).
