And would be too far to the left to win the nomination as a Democrat today. People hate Nixon for two reasons, one his paranoia, Watergate corruption, breaking the law, ect, and for the drug war because stoners think being able to smoke weed freely is the most paramount of all issues. But let's look at Nixon's track record:

    -Created the EPA
    -Instigated price and wage controls
-Proposed to congress mandating all full time employees have health insurance and have costs partially covered by federal subsidies. Literally had Nixon not been a paranoid asshole we might have a functioning national health care system right now.
    -Opened relations with communist China
-Greatly increased as a percent of GDP spending on social welfare while decreasing military spending.
-Presented the only balanced budget between 1961-1998
-Took us fully off the gold standard and Brenton Woods system
    -Signed Clean Air act
    -Created OSHA
    -Created the Supplemental Security Income(SSI)
    -Established consumer product safety commission
-Signed federal water pollution control act
-Signed SALT 1 and the Anti ballistic missile treaty with the Soviet Union
-Instigated a cooperation between NASA and the Soviet space program
-Started the Philadelphia plan, the first major federal affirmative action program
    -Signed Title IX
    -Also Title X
    -Supported the ERA
    -Equal employment opportunity act

The point is, we're all fucked.

    *edit*
Also in regards to the drug war, Nixon may have started it and passed the Controlled Substance act, but the DEA was a small operation until Reagan, Reagan started to increase it somewhat in the early 80's............then crack came along.

You've already convinced me of this in another thread. I've since been spreading the word :)

Reagan is the true enemy and I wish more saw that.

I love that picture so much, considering how Obama has spent the last year basically trying to become a Republican, I also like this:

This thread is built on sarcasm right? I mean I don't disagree about Reagan being a huge douchebag as well, but I mean come on...

Richard Nixon should be brought back to life so that we can publicly stone him.

And opening up relations with Red China made them an industry giant and allowed American companies to take their manufacturing offshore.

America is still the number one manufacturing country.
We give more of our jobs to robots than to Asia.

I think India has a much bigger stake of our outsourcing, and that's mostly tech and phone support.

Times were different then. Republicans were different then.

40 years ago The Republican Party was run by the Republicans from the Northeast-well educated. Understanding of History, Economics, and true Social Values.

Today The Republican Party is run by Republicans from the South. Not well educated, not worldly, and lets face it-racist.

More than just racist. Moralist (though that can apply to both parties), and against anything other than Christianity.

Did you even read the OP? Nixon did things that that Democrats only in New England and California could even propose and still get elected today.

Opening relations with China didn't make them an industry giant, China's economy still didn't begin to expand until Deng Xiaoping's reforms in the early 80's. Nixon was pragmatic enough to realize it's asinine not to have official relations with one of the world's leading countries.

I live here. What's your point?

He did conduct bombing campaigns in Cambodia which I don't find excusable. He also did in Laos.

But someone earlier this week asserted that the CIA was behind the Lol Nol takeover of Cambodia. Here was my short reply.

I'll cite all this if you'd like.

I was unaware of his environmental accomplishments, that is quite impressive for so early.
