My mom stop taking me to my appointments because she thinks dreads are nasty, and disgusting. I've come to far to just cut my hair, so how can I interlock my own dreads, and lock the new growth that's starting to come in?

My hair is 4 inches long when dry, but about 5 to 5 1/2 inches when wet.

your hair is barely long enough to dread, chill out and let your hair grow for a while

Do you know what a dreadlock is, or have any idea how it works?

How would anything they could do actualy help your roots lock up? Shit just makes weak locks.

Thanks guys, I really didn't have the right information. So many people were telling so many different things from putting gels, waxes, to even putting mashed-up fruit in my hair. I feel so relived.

I’m assuming that you are black, sorry if I’m wrong … the point being that you can either go to the salon:

Or you can say F*ck It!:

Choice is yours … but I warn you, choose wisely

thanks, this thread was actually helpful.
umm yeah im black. the my main problem was since my mom stooped taking me to the salon, I didn't really know what to do. My stylist was telling me that the neglect method was dirty and nasty(she probably just wanted my money). but I've been reading up on the different methods, and I'm deciding on sticking with the neglect method. I haven't done anything to my hair for the past seven months now except washing it, and I'm starting to notice the difference between doing none thing to it, and going to the salon every few months.

salon people will always tell you that stuff because their job is there for them to make money. if they can have you come back every month for "maintenance," why wouldn't they, i haven't been to a hairdressers in over two years and my dreads are fine, hair knots, thats what its supposed to do. we just encourage it along faster sometimes

I have never in my capacity as a "professional" anything ever tried to talk someone into something they didn't explicitly need, and as an electrician the opportunity for telling someone they'll need a new consumer unit full of expensive RCBO's is ever present. I don't get how anyone would try and bullshit you into paying them money and sleep easy at night, I suppose it's probably best to assume they don't know any better and they actually believe the shit they tell people.

good job reading the "read this" thread. and kudos for choosing the neglect method. your locks will be cooler and more unique because of it.

also, i wanted to add that b/c of your hair type, you can also just twist them, if you decide to maintain them more. but, i definitely recommend neglect.
