lets say you could open a rift to three minutes ago, and it's one way. the ambient energy in the room would be radiating through the portal into the same room, three minutes prior. if this room is a closed system, the energy radiated into the room through this hole would produce a feedback loop three minutes prior to the device being activated, resulting in an exponential increase in ambient energy over time. free energy, anyone?
