There are currently posts here at Protest about not patronizing WalMart and demonstrating at McDonalds. By no means do I want to draw attention away from these worthy contributions. I just want to expand things. In preface let me say of course that it is NOT OK that Bush got elected. And the Republican Party and its supporters in their perspectives and desires are NOT OK people. It is the patriotic duty of every moral human being to set them on the straight and narrow path. I employ their vocabulary for good reason. You must use their own weapons against them. This means YOU. You better get used to it. So there's this newspaper article "Most Corporate PACs favor GOP" from Washington Post contributor Thomas B Edsall. Sorry I'm not providing links -- no doubt some good supporter here will do this for me -- but the piece appeared in a number of newspapers nationwide the week of November 21. And you can check out Political Money Line (a nonpartisan tracking service). The article says Political Money Line found more than a quarter of large corporate PACs gave at least $3 to Republican candidates for every $1 to Democrats because of "ideological compatibility". Giving 100% of their money to Republicans: PHILLIPS International Inc. COOPER Industries Inc. FLOWERS Industries Inc. Giving more than 90% of their money to Republicans: OUTBACK STEAKHOUSE Inc. 96% EXXON MOBIL Corp. 96% WENDY'S International 93% HALLIBURTON Co. 91% We're all consumers so -- consume wisely. If it's ideology they want -- consume IDEOLOGICALLY.
There's also some very inclusive lists over at badcorp and corpwatch with extensive details as to why we should boycott them. Not all of the reasons are for funding certain politicians but they're pretty bad. Also there's this list of American companies that consistently export jobs etc: List of 'Un-American' Companies I dont begrudge anyone who gets any of these jobs because I'm sure they need it. I just don't like it when some of these 'American' companies play a two faced game of promoting themselves as 'American' but behind closed doors they're causing Americans to go hungry.
I agree with you that Bush is a horrible, horrible president...but what the fuck? You're boycotting corporations for not agreeing with you? Most of these corporations never endorsed a candidate, so even worse, you're boycotting corporations because their top executives supported the other guy. What the hell are they supposed to do? Just shut up because they don't share your views? While there are legitimate reasons to boycott some companies, they don't have anything to do with their political affiliation. The Outback Steakhouse is not in business to elect George Bush; they're in business to sell steaks. What the hell ever happened to freedom of thought? I'm glad you aren't president. You are the kind of person that would have all of the opposition killed or "disappeared." If you're against Bush - and I certainly am too - find a way to better your cause. Give to charities, give to 527s, give to the DNC. Win these executves over through debate. But don't try to stifle their free speech just because they don't agree with you.
Ben & Jerry are both lifelong Democrats and have won numerous business ethics awards throughout their careers.
Ben and Jerry no longer own Ben and Jerry's. They sold out to the Anglo-Dutch food giant, Unilever, years ago.
Kandahar I have nothing against freedom of thought but this is about a lot more than that. It's about power and money and real life consequences. Boycotts are one way to effect change. I also want to call your attention to the fact that power and money do NOT equate with freedom of speech.
Wow my goodness!!! some people really have to think farther then the politics. This is more then just what the corporation supports and who they support… lets think about the ethics and morals of the items and martial things YOU as a person are choosing to buy and support. Let's dive a little into McDonalds, think all every individual burger in there own nice little BOX. These boxes don’t show up out of know where. It’s a resource of this earth (tree’s) that is being abused and mistreated just for your North American comfort. What about All the inorganic produce and food that is brought thousands of miles in big semi-trucks to each Mc Donald’s location. All the energy and gas consumption just to transport these food’s to a local Mc Donald’s let alone all the “mono” cropping involved in the growing of this food and the depletion of the soil……. energy and consumption of poisonous gasses just to keep off bug’s off and keep trackers moving. All the water and food that goes to toward all the Cattle -witch are mistreated ready to be slaughtered (possibly genetically altered)- its going to waste just cause u want to have a rushed life and feel you have to go to Mc Donald’s and consciously decide that you don’t want to take a few minutes to make a good organic veggie dish. I think its around 40% of perfectly good water that is used for mono-producing of cattle, that could be put toward many environmentally conscious Farming and local produce.. which many of these local farms focus on sustainable organic agriculture. Now this is all on the top of my head, I’m not even scratching the surface!!!!! And this is only Mc Donald’s. Think of How many large Corporations in North America, and how they operate Strictly for there benefit….not long term sustainability If each one of us “YOU” and “ME” choose wisely to not enforce these corporation think of the difference we could make. (they Rely on “YOU” and “ME” to survive) So take it to a more personal level. when u go to that grocery store, and u live lets say in British Columbia, and you go to buy an apple that says its from California , Think of the ethics and morals behind this. Don’t think (oh well its cheaper! And tastes just as good.. sooooo why not buy it?) Think of all the energy and guide lines it took for this produce to get into the store. And how land that this produce is grown on is being treated (Eat local, Act local) Think global P.s. like I said…… I just wrote this is off the top of my head and did not get any solid facts or research on how much energy is being consumed in these processes, but im sure u could just imagine the devastation
i'd have to say, try to boycott as many corporations as you can. the evil empire only exists because we buy into it. buy local, support small businesses. think global, act local
I was just about with you upto the above thought.. say your quite wrong .. yeah i can imagine the devastation if i was that way inclined .. http://www.mcspotlight.org/company/publications/mcfact_card5.html
Sorry i dont understand what your saying, ( http://www.mcspotlight.org/company/publications/mcfact_card5.html WARNING - the information on this page is company propaganda, produced to persuade you to buy more of McDonald's products. Parts of it may be deliberately misleading.)
The irony is that if people followed your advice, those local businesses would become successful corporations. Then you'd boycott THOSE businesses for no other reason than you resent their success. I like small business too, but if a corporation provides a better product or service at a cheaper price, I choose the corporation.
i dont really get your logic. if everyone bought local, there wouldnt be huge multinational conglomerates, there would only BE local small businesses. we vote with our money everyday.
The multinational conglomerates you despise so much had to start somewhere. Many of them were local small businesses at one point. If everyone bought local, some small businesses would eventually figure out a better way to maximize their profits: perhaps by combining forces with a few other small businesses, or by expanding to neighboring towns, or by franchising. Bang, you have a new corporation to boycott...not because it's an evil empire, but because you resent its success.
What a wonderful idea. People are hooked on it. You've inspired a photoshop moment. Now I just need to get that nozzle to look like a hypodermic. The reality is that there are alternatives to the petrol fix. I had a friend who's father invented an electric mechanism for cars. Basicly, it was a central source of electricity distributed to four independant motors on each wheel. Each motor also in turn generated more electricity. There's also plans drifting about for a solar bicycle contraption that's awesome. I got to ride one once and the thing got up to 40mph. That's not speed demon but on a bicycle it's hella fast. My friend who's a long time contraption maker/ lifelong construction dude invented it. As soon as I get the plans from him I think I'll post it on these forums because he's stated he wants to offer them up for free to anyone. (Patented of course, so some big azz corp can't monopolize it.) I'd recommend "The Corporation" as a good flick over what they do and how the corporations affect our world. It's a disturbing picture of what really goes on. The shiny, lovely front facade is only there to draw one in, like a flytrap.
