    I do.

    Do you?

I live behind a stretch of Chiptole burritos, grocery stores, Quiznos, etc etc, who throw out everything as soon as the date passes.

I don't think it's weird although some people might be repulsed by it.

I'm also not sure if dumpster diving is illegal where you live so if it is don't post, or whatever.

I'm not sure about this, but I'd imagine the same way you can get sued if you have a vacant house and somebody breaks into it. If they get hurt, they sue you because you had an unsecured "attractive nuisance" or something.

And really, I think the reason people are allowed to make (and win) frivolous lawsuits like this is because the law would rather prevent people from leaving unsecured property and food around in the first place. Hell, if all of our available food went into stomachs instead of the garbage, the delicate "balance of power" would be upset.

I don't think people that dumpster dive are the same kinds of people that have lawyers and want to sue people

but yeah op, it's awesome. I especially love it when people just set their unfinished food on top of trash cans and it's still warm. I got some amazing curry that way once :)

    That unfortuately is the problem.

The company can get sued because they did not take proper precautions with the food that they discarded. The company is responsible for their trash.

If what they say about lawyers in hospital lobbies is true, I don't think they have to be those "types".

And it only takes one big lawsuit to scare business owners into enforcing this law.

I'd imagine the person who actually sues is the same person that looks at a dumpster or anything else and thinks "oh, that looks like a nice lawsuit" - not necessarily a person who would actually dumpster dive ordinarily. If you've ever driven behind an "insurance chaser", you know the type.

I'm nervous to go dumpster diving in my area only because so many people get in trouble for doing so.

I do utilize good curb finds that the trash people didn't take, though. I just found an awesome table that I'm going to revamp and some old wooden crate-type boxes that I'm going to clean and use for my towels and bathroom stuff.

Oh yeah...people left and right have been getting in big trouble. Companies are locking up their dumpsters and putting cameras outside their buildings to bust people.

But then again, my area is filled with trashy people who leave garbage just sitting outside the dumpsters when they start picking through it...I had it happen at a store I worked in...I hated going out there when it was sub-zero temperatures just to pick up garbage.

Which reminds me. Cops take people's trash all the time.

I don't dig around in businesses' trash mainly because I know what goes into our trash and yeah...no way would I eat that, the "edible" waste gets mixed with all the rank garbage. That includes raw meat, food that may be bad, half-eaten stuff...yeah, no. And I don't dig around in our trash out here because there's a camera and I'm paranoid enough just throwing my trash out, I'm not hanging around longer than that takes. But my grandma used to find stuff in her dumpster ALL the time when I was a kid. I got some really neat toys and a 1971 Pilsbury Doughboy out of there. I LOVE that Doughboy. :D

I'm no dumpster diver , so please correct me if I'm wrong . But isn't it a fact that when a person or company throws something away in the trash it becomes pubic domain ? I mean l.e.o.'s , private dicks, and intelligence agencies take people trash all the time for intelligence gathering . Isn't it refuse because you didn't want it anymore ? It seems that the legality of it would be maybe trespass , but on a public street it would seem you would have had to be warned for that to be the case .
As far as the law suits , that just seems crazy to me . I think that's the very reason a lot of restaurants and food shops don't donate their unused fresh food to homeless and charitable organizations . Fear of law suits . How sad is that ? But how can one sue when they retrieved the food from a dumpster or trash bin ? Clearly the risk of contamination was there when the eater took the food . I'm not saying there's anything wrong with it . I'm just saying I wouldn't take the chance unless I was starving and had no choice , or the original plastic packaging was intact and could be washed clean with alcohol or antiseptic . To do it as a frugal way of living , just seems risky to me . But what the hell do I know ? To each his own . To make it a criminal act , seems absurd to me .

that's pretty much always the case for most salvageable items, they wouldn't open an expired box of cookies and throw them all over the trash bin they just throw out all the expired boxes at once and you find a bunch of unopened stuff

I personally think everyone should dumpster dive theres all kinds of good things in the trash I use to return scrap metal for money to make a little extra cash and i was in all kinds of dumpsters people throw away hundreds of dollars worth of metal. but other then that theres like hundreds of other items. a lot of the stuff is still usable if people used their trash more we wouldnt find ourselfs burried in huge mounds within our landfills

Identity thieves have been known to dumpster dive and look for people's discarded bills and other personal information. One can never tell if a person is dumpster diving for the right or wrong reasons.

I know, it's bullshit. Dumpster diving can be very resourceful. But be careful.

I think suing is one of the most worst things ever created. suing is complete bull crap. I mean honestly how can this be allowed to happen? it is ridiculous.

just as stupid as if some kids hop your fence and drown in your pool you are held responsible. why should someone be held responsible for someone's own poor decisions?

people who sue other people over stupid reasons are scum of the earth.

I agree that there are sometimes situations where suing can be fair. but stuff like this is wrong.

everything is way to strict. they act like all humans are retarded.

like that lady that sue'd someone because the plastic hot chocolate did not say caution hot. it's like wtf! it's HOT CHOCOLATE!!!!

yeah this is just a post about me being angry about suing. but ya know I just do not understand how it can be allowed to happen.

back in the day this kind of stupid stuff did not exist. I think back in the day overall society was better. screw this new age. I think ever since year 2000 crap has just been getting worse and worse.

anyway back to dumpster diving. I don't know that seems risky. ya never know what is in a dumpster. what if there is glass in there or some sharp metal object or something and as you are reaching around you get cut and then all that trash bacteria get into that cut. I guess you could buy some super thick tough gloves or something.

    regarding dumpster diving and food

If I was a bum I would not dumpster dive for food. I would kill rabbit n stuff and eat them. where I live they are all over the place. I would also steal from apple trees, plum tress, fig trees, every fruit tree. lots of tree branches hang over peoples fences.

plus you can always find someone to buy a fast food meal for you. and churches offer food. so really being a bum you can easily get plenty of food without dumpster diving.
