Basically, if you knew you definitely were not going to heaven when you die, would you still worship your deity?

I know there are many religions out there, but to make the question easy to ask, I just went with God & heaven. Apply this concept to your own religion.

Sure, if I believed in a higher power I might worship it for other reasons: good luck on the hunt, or a good harvest, or safe passage, or healing, or other help in other matters.

In other words, if an afterlife in heaven was off the table, I'd be sucking up for a few breaks in this life, here. ;)

Any sane person would go insane if they knew hell was real and they were going there.

i'm not going to heaven, because heaven does not exist

except in a book of myths, and even there only vaguely

so i guess the answer is no, i am not going to a place that does not exist and i don't worship a deity that doesn't exist

    bummer!

Maybe. But I mean what's so scary about hell? After the first day or so of burning, I imagine I'd be able to mind over matter and not care about the pain. I'm not really friends with anyone who isn't a devout sinner, so I think I'd rather go to hell and be with people I like than go to heaven

But it's HELL: you wouldn't see your friends EVER AGAIN.

Your pain would be infinite - when the time came that you felt you may be able to relax your muscles from the spasms, just when you thought you would be able to breathe after feeling like you're drowning for eternity, just as you feel you may have the energy to renounce your ways as a sinner and BEG for forgiveness - the suffering will increase...

I probably would go insane myself. If I knew I wasn't going to Heaven (assuming the only alternative was hell) I think I'd rather no longer exist.

Dressed in white, I like black Tims and black hoodies

God will probably have me on some real strict shit
No sleepin' all day, no gettin' my dick licked
Hangin' with the goodie-goodies loungin' in paradise

If I knew there was a God (which I'm not completely sure of) and I knew there was definitely no chnace of going to heaven then no way would I waste my life worshipping, what'd be the point?

I don't think you understand what Hell is. It is meant to be a place of eternal pain - not a stroll through some glass where only a small portion of your body is being cut. If hell exists in the profound form it is often expressed it will likely be a mental as well as physical pain. Perhaps it will go beyond even that (how could we know?)

It's best not to think about it...:bomb::dizzy2:

It wouldn't be the same as that though, Hell (even though I don't believe in it) is supposed to be just a place of infinite suffering, for the rest of eternity and not just physical pain, with no happiness whatsoever

If hell is the worst pain imaginable eternally, I would do anything to avoid it. Cutting my eyes out, walking on hot coals my whole life, listening to indie music... anything

The idea that good people can still go to Hell is what made me turn away from Christianity. The idea that God would be so cruel as to create a place of eternal suffering in the first place is what made me stop believing in God, at least in the way that religions like Christianity and Islam envision him.

I think religions that support the concept of Hell really illustrate sadomasochism in human nature.

Well, I just read Judges 19. I don't really see what it has to do with this thread, but wtf....so the only thing I got out of that passage is that someone really wanted to leave but kept being bribed and held back by food and drink and concubines...and then everyone sexually abused the poor concubine and then someone killed her and cut her up in pieces and sent her body parts out to different parts of Israel.

Whoa that’s fuck up now I kind of wana read the bible does that mean am going to hell?
And yes ur right I never could understand why would god have such place as hell. He should be infinitely perfect and infinitely good and we are suppose to be made in he’s image so first how could we commit sins and second if we do and get punish for it wouldn’t it mean that god is a masochist.

All I'm trying to communicate is that Hell as it has been presented is something to do anything avoid. I don't believe in God or Hell, but if I did, I'd be a motherfucking God-fearing man. Not existing at all would be better than your existence being eternal pain and suffering. If Hell is meant as a punishment, I don't see anyone overcoming the pain; I also don't see anyone chillin' with Tupac. It's not supposed to be physical pain; you don't even have a body anymore. It's spiritual pain; what form that might take, who knows? But I imagine it would be unbearable.

Well in the theology God isn't responsible for hell is he? That would mean he is responsible for the devil as well, which would be a bit silly :)
