^ Good point, we do have our own contamination problems involving industrial agriculture.

I don't think the Article laid blame to why there were high levels of Cadmium in the soil, but also pointed to the fact that Rice is a bioaccumulater of Cadmium. Different plants have an affinity to accumulate certain elements. However it is very likely the reason could be the industrial practices of China, but there isn't evidence for the article to make that claim. Cadmium also isn't automatically not a naturally occurring element, very often there are non essential nutritional elements found in soils, including cadmium, which can be a product of weathered parent material that contributes to soil composition.

Also the only person this could potentially effect is Etherea if his market truly does import from China. However 12 Million tons actually isn't a lot of Rice. It's not the majority of their production, and I doubt if any of the 12 million tons is exported, considering very very little rice is exported for China. U.S. is pretty self dependent on rice, a lot is grown in Arkansas and California.

Yes there are a lot of problems, and especially domestic. My point is that there is really no reason to get all fed up with China over this case in particular. It seems a pretty selfish American attitude to jump to that conclusion. But to be fair to those people, god damn, China's industry IS extremely irresponsible and environmentally neglectful, but that's only because The U.S. set a standard of industrial production, and no world power run by humans would not harness the greed involved with having to meet those standards to make them feel adequate.

So now not even legitimate research is a valid way of learning, and contributing to a discussion? Somehow we must have experiences that implants information in our head before hand... like those statistics you just presented.

Well, the amount of rice that is imported to the U.S. from China is probably very insignificant, I couldn't find that number anywhere (doesn't mean it's not out there), but I'm not sure how Odon's argument and information is invalid.

That's under $50, so according to Odon, it's not important.

Thanks. I'll avoid a particular brand of electric heater and drywall, perhaps.
When I need either I'll PM you and ask for more details.
Thanks (again) for the heads up.

The United States is unique as a major exporter of all rice types.
The US imports about 4 million $ worth of rice (about 2% of world imports).
My point was, as far as I am aware, the likelihood of this contaminated rice reaching the US is virtually zero.
If you are concerned you check where the rice you are buying is from or where the rice in your processed food comes from.
The likelihood is it isn't from China and it is even unlikelier it was this rice.

If I were to purchase a dodgy product from China (e.g drywall and electric heaters) that doesn't mean I'm going to boycott ALL Chinese products.
My assertion is, the majority of products made In China are not crappy and substandard and if you removed all products made in China, from the US, the US would collapse.
I will add: into the stone age.
It's perfectly reasonable and perfectly normal to be concerned or/and frustrated if goods are faulty.
But, imho, you don't write off the entire produce of a country because certain good are ...

    Yes.

My experience of Chinese rice, and Chinese products in general, is that most if not all are perfectly fine; I have no bad experiences with Chinese products.
Obviously you get what you pay for, and If I'm paying less than £20 for a product I might not expect the highest of quality.
This price/quality differential isn't unique to China.

The general reaction in this thread is: we should avoid rice and obviously all products made in China because of a batch of contaminated rice from China.
Lets not research where our rice comes from lets just just avoid all products from a country because of scare-mongering.

    Is this criticism?
If so, sorry for getting a little emotional in a post.
The tone might be off the content, perhaps, not so.
Correct me where I am wrong.

You give th world GM rice not approved for human consumption ;)

If your OP statement is true and you couldn't get your cereal...
...did you try a different store?
...do you know that this rice is used in your cereal?
...do you realise your cereal was probably made and shipped a long time before this scare?
...in all honesty, what is the likelihood of this contaminated rice having any bearing on your lack of ability to get your cereal over the last two weeks?
...was it just a flippant statement?

Now you've moved on to the import and export of rice within the US....
Has the US got a deficit in rice of all types?
Is this contaminated rice likely to have any detrimental impact on US imports of rice?
Was I right in thinking this was just a little bit of scare-mongering?

Bottom line is, there was some contaminated rice found in China...and?

Their scooters. Small engines both have a poor trackrecord and turns out difficult to find parts and service here in the us. The people that bought the chinese scooters over the tiawan ones were assured that they could get parts and servive at Honda...nope. I use electic heat and a back up electric space heater in my trailer. The replacement back ups from china no longer have a thermostat just a low and high. Plus they only last a year. Remember thats backup....occasionally used.

And Oden, no where did I say ban products coming in. Id rather see global quality standards and global standards in consumption type goods as well. By making them improve their goods it would not only put better safer goods on the market but it would make their costs more and then the US and im sure European goods as well would have a better chance at competing with them. China should have a equal shot at the global market and bring in a better life for its people and that goes for everyother country as well for that matter but we can't just give away all the jobs here for them.

Well,I would certainly say to stop ALL products from China unless and untill they stop their hacking of our businesses, military and the copying of movies, cds, dvds and whatever other mischief they engage in. Our country is in a bind that is not helped in any way by using products from other countries. Radical problems deserve radical solutions. Do we want our citizens to regain the jobs that have been sent elsewhere or not. The only republican idea I agree with is the one Pat Buchanon put forth, commonly referred to as"fortress america". Seal the borders, re-open our factories , institute huge tariffs on american companies that have gone elswhere and buy american. This postulate is offered within the context of the capitalist system that worked for 100 years, so I imagine someone will shift levels on me and look at the faults in capitalism, who really runs the money and all that.

I know "all that" ,but that's another topic. We need a good dose of socialism encompassing health care and education. And get out of these damn wars and never return to Asia or the middle east again in the warlike way our leaders seem to like. And pay off the national debt so that we own ourselves instead of others owning us.

snowtiggernd, which brand of scooter are you talking about?

I understand what you mean by "global quality standards"...
Here, in the UK, goods need to meet EU standards/regulations etc...isn't there a similar criteria in the US?
Sure, there are products that slip through the net.
    That's half the trouble...
Let's be fair, it is true there are some crappy substandard goods made in China.
My problem is when people say "Most" or even "All"...this is simply untrue.
If a US retailer wants to buy cheap Chinese goods with out the backing of a reputable customer service...you'll be struggling to support your new purchase if you buy from them.
    I've done it myself...
I'm quite sure I could have found spare parts for my cheap substandard product from China, but I didn't even try and find any.
There are companies that specialise in providing spare parts for Chinese scooters, and other goods.
But there will always be products that don't have any type of after-sale service.
I could run through a myriad of Chinese products that either are only supported in China or are not supported at all.
The point is, there are a greater amount of Chinese goods that are excellent and are supported by good customer service.
The companies are almost endless... http://www.made-in-china.com/
We all use these quality products every single day.

Imagine this: Imagine if I could watch every TV station in the US.
There was no filter to any of the programmes, by the means of the 5 terrestrial stations watching the TV shows first and filtering out the crap (for the most part). And, on the other hand, only let me see series that had won awards, lasted more than one season and had the best scripts and the best production values...
I actually have the option of both...
I choose to not watch unfiltered TV and I do sit in front of mainstream TV that has been filtered.
If I chose to watch unfiltered TV would it be fair to say most US TV is substandard crap?
Wouldn't it be fairer to say that: If you want crap it is available, but you could watch quality US TV for the rest of your life and be thoroughly entertained and informed for all of your life.
It might be a bad allegory, but I hope you see what I'm getting at.

    You didn't. I did.
I said that because you said "Pretty much everything they export is substandard crap."
I wanted to hear your reaction to that scenario.
I guess you don't want to go to that extreme, but you don't seem to have a response to that scenario.
What do you think would happen?

It pretty much does, which is the problem...
It has cheap labour and other cheaper over-heads and is having a product orgasm, much like most of the world had too.
The difference is, now goods made outside of China, pretty much, have to have certain standards.
It simply isn't cost effective to make so many substandard goods because the business would not last too long.

    All?

    http://www.madeinusa.org/

but china owns a WAD of u.s. debt. what is in it for them to destroy their customers by selling poisoned products. none of this makes sense to me...you don't kill your fucking customers if you have any sense....

The grain may be fed to domestic animals whereby the carcinogins will be concentrated. Those consuming meat products will receive a double dose.

More than a double dose, depending on how much the animals ate and where in their bodies it's deposited. Internal organs are the filtering system.
