I have been staying with my sister and when I have been trying to sleep lately I have been reading her self help books to fall asleep. They tend to be a touch religious at times and say the obvious other but they make me think. Should I pay attention to what they are saying or just use them like I have as a night time sleep aid? Do any of you like them?
i have a few.. therapist recommended ones. they help, but like all things like that i don't take all of it in. just what i need. the religious stuff doesn't exactly apply to me..
Only if you help yourself... I love listening to a Deepak Chopra book occasionally. If they have spiritual/life truths, then they definitely can help you overcome not being able to sleep. I wouldn't recommend self help books as you're trying to sleep though... It should make you consider and rethink your life which can be time consuming process so you won't be able to get to bed.
NSS :biker: I guess, if you are reading books that are not for what "disorder" you have, then they can be of no use whatsoever. People that do not have a particular "disorder" can see the obvious points being raised. Those who have the disorder" might not wish to or are not able to see the obvious. Which is obvious.
It depends. I've seen this one about raising teenagers that was clearly aimed to make the parent feel better, and treated teenagers as if they were some sort've ferocious beast, and recommended talking to your teen like a robotic therapist - which would only serve to make them hate you. I've also read Guide to Stress Reduction, and found some of the stuff in there (particularly about breathing exercises and autogenics) to be helpful in lowering my anxiety in a most limitless way.
I have read one self help book that actually didn't put me to sleep... Everyday Karma by Carmen Harra (I believe thats her name but I'm not sure) It touches on religion but it was very helpful for me at a time when I felt lost. Other than that, self help books tend to put me to sleep...either that or they seem to state things that really are too obvious and I get angry that I actually wasted money to buy it.
In My Humble Opinion Self Help Books Are A Total Waste Of HARD Earned Money. Just Recently I Went Through A Stressful Few Weeks Suffering From "Erectile-Disfunction"......So I Decided To Get On The Internuts And Cure Myself. This Is A Brief Summery Of How It Panned Out After I Bought The Following Self Help Books. (1)..."Hard And Fast"...Turned Out To Be A Booklet On Reccommended Tire Pressures For Racing Cars.... (2)..."A Guide To The World Hardest Erections"...Turned Out It Examines The Most Difficult To Construct High Rise Buildings In The World.... (3)..."Erections-R-Us"...Turned Out To Be An Advertisment For A Crane Hire Company. (4)..."Get Hard In 20 Minutes"...Turned Out To Be The Sales Pitch For A Business That Markets "Quick Set Concrete". As You Can All Clearly See From The Above, Self-Help Books Fix Nothing They Claim To, And My Problem Persists.... Cheers Glen.
I cant even remember the last book i read, let alone a self help one And why really? thats what the interweb is for
I read a book called The Magic Of Believing when I was a teen, and it really resonated with me and affected my thinking for the rest of my life. It was an early, positive-thinking type book. If any book says things that make sense to you, that make your world more understandable or make you feel better personally, why not take it to heart? Wisdom is wisdom. It can come in different forms, use different words that connect with some and leave others cold. What is important, I believe, is to read, period. To read is to learn. And learning is never a bad thing.
It seems pretty easy to be an ethical slut. Just let 'em know you're fucking with their heart in the beginning. As far as self help, I suppose theres probably some value to reading the advice of someone who's very wise and advising you on a specific problem. But the feel good stuff that's all pretty vague is ostensibly worthless, unless the person finds them actually inspirational to change their lives. Ask Def Zeppelin. He's my Oprah. :sunny:
"Should I pay attention to what they are saying or just use them like I have as a night time sleep aid? Do any of you like them?" I couldn't agree with you more, I too have experienced some may be religious and obvious, Yet in my opinion; I think it's responsible of you to find comfort in a productive way. kudos. I'm in agreement with boog on this -"they help, but like all things like that i don't take all of it in. just what i need." I say ,take whatcha need and leave the rest!
:afro: Great fuckin' idea OZ...*hear the air move* as the one I'm flinging at you is aimed at your noggen!
