Is it going to be a new sound, a new version of the old (like the The bands in the early oughties), retro, is it going to come through an incorporation of rock into the now dominant hip-hop, is it going to rise up from the underground or will it not come?
I have been struggling with the fact that rock is dead for some time now. Just when a few good ones come out and I really enjoy their first album they release a second shitty album that is obviously influenced by others.
^ Well, Cage the Elephant's second album is a million times better than their first and shows clear influence from the Pixies and other late 80s/early 90s rock (and their first one sounded pretty grunge-like) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PKSpgmr3jEg&feature=related"]YouTube - Cage the Elephant - Around My Head https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PMBX1qYPDOc"]YouTube - Cage the Elephant- Sell Yourself (Lyrics) But I definitely feel you there; when the Hives and the Vines started getting crappy my heart died a little.
Rock has always been alive and kickin', but I see listeners constantly killing it OVER, and OVER, and OVER, every time they say, "rock is dead".
Well, being, or not being on the rock radio/hit lists doesn't really determine what is, or isn't rock. All it means is that the artists/bands on the radio/hit charts get that much more media coverage. Now, you're expressing your opinion of Taking Back Sunday's music. That's your personal view toward the music they play. Again, that doesn't determine what is, or isn't rock. Sure, you can hold onto your belief that they don't play real rock. You're fully entitled to that. But what exactly is real rock, anyway? A million different people could come up with their own theory of what real rock is about, but don't you think, in many cases, personal taste gets in the way of making sensible judgment? Just my opinion.
c'mon, it isn't like there isn't good music to listen to. i mean, really, what is rock anyway? whether it is 'alive' or 'dead' makes no difference to me, seeing as how virtually nothing i listen to relies on systematic ratings based on album/merchandise/ticket sales anyway. i mean, rock & roll (rock, whatever) was but a phase of musical evolution. it has been marketed to death and explored down nearly every existing avenue. who wants to listen to nothing but a 4/4 beat with generic chord progressions and some guy noodling on a minor pentatonic scale as he expresses his distaste in having his proverbial skateboard broken? not me, that shit's boring.
Yeah, I see what you mean, the genre's so limited: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GXCh9OhDiCI"]YouTube - Ministry - Jesus Built My Hotrod (Video Version) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wFbBwXNjYCA"]YouTube - The Ark - It Takes A Fool To Remain Sane and certainly there is nothing original you can do with guitars: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4xaB6dZE9j0"]YouTube - Animals As Leaders - "On Impulse" Popularity doesn't effect one's own enjoyment of a song at all. I have songs from forum members that I love just as much as my Cage the Elephant, the Strokes, and even Hendrix. However, it limits the potential exploration of the genre, general exposure, ability to relate with others and discuss the music. And I for one find that the media greatly effects the general moods, thoughts, etc. of a populace. Simplistic, plastic, mass-produced input leads to similarly simplistic, superficial, uniform output. Garbage in, garbage out. Evolution? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mXvmSaE0JXA"]YouTube - Broadcast Yourself.
