I don't understand it. Those who listen to pop music the likes of Birtney Spears, Kesha, Lady Gaga, Rhianna etc can you please explain to me why you like it? It seems like can you get all the same tones (edgy, sad, inspirational etc) from rap music plus you get like 8x as many lyrics for which to express real statements and thoughts. Is it the beats, the pace, the image I don't get it. You can even find mainstream rap that's as easy to listen to and accessible as any Katy Perry song.

Anyway help me out, why the fuck do they play this shit on my radio.

Most mainstream rap could be considered "pop" music. There's hardly any REAL rap that actually comes on the radio anymore. The only good rap music these days is the underground shit.

Because most people enjoy music on a very surface level where all they want is something either enjoyable for the car ride/something they can dance to. Music isn't as serious a subject to most people as it it to some people.

    Also Lady Gaga is awesome.

Also pop music for the past 60 years has out performed all genres of music.

I don't see a difference between mainstream rap and mainstream pop.

Not true at all, Dark Side of the moon was (possibly still is) the longest charting album on the billboards for a good 15+ years.

Tons of metal, rap, country and various non pop music peak at no. 1 or high on the billboards and many non-pop musicians sell far better on tour than pop performers/musicians.

Not advocating poppy music, but I don't enjoy rap because of all the cliche black people shit and just really the sound of the vocals, melody (if you can call it that), and the beats.

Pop music (a term that originally derives from an abbreviation of "popular") is usually understood to be commercially recorded music, often oriented towards a youth market, usually consisting of relatively short, simple songs utilizing technological innovations to produce new variations on existing themes.

    ...

Musicologists often identify the following characteristics as typical of the pop music genre:

-an aim of appealing to a general audience, rather than to a particular sub-culture or ideology

-an emphasis on craftsmanship rather than formal "artistic" qualities

-an emphasis on recording, production, and technology, over live performances

-a tendency to reflect existing trends rather than progressive developments

-much pop music is intended to encourage dancing, or it uses dance-oriented beats or rhythms

(I wasn't sure if you were serious or not, but what you said reflects pretty common thought either way)

any mention of race when referring to somebody is actually 'racist'

though the comment was a bit ignorant, the ignorance of a whole genre because of 'cliche black people shit' outweighs it.

That goes for all types of music except classical and pop. There really no such thing as underground pop and as for classical must of been underground stuff for its time (lot more ppl played instruments then too) but like all music over time the best will rise to the top and become mainstream.

What's wrong with you? Lady GaGa kicks ass.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bg1PIMWtI7I"]YouTube - Lady Gaga - Alejandro (Skrillex Remix)

But really, I liked the alejandro video.... She's no great artist, but still doing some sort of important things, I think.....

You have to think about what the music is meant to do.

I don't see pink floyd as particularly pop.... They struck a lot of chords (har har) with a lot of people, but pop music is designed to do nothing but sell, the genre name says it all: it's designed to be POPular. Pink floyd is great music, beyond just the numbers that like it.

So something designed just to sell can't be great? And music made from the heart and soul can't be bad? It doesn't matter what it's designed for, it's what it is. Floyd wrote pop, it's recorded music aimed at wide audience. That's all pop is.
