Red Riding Hood Movie Blurb by Shale March 12, 2011 This movie was pretty much trashed by critics (aggregate 12% liked it) but 65% of audiences liked it. It is the retelling of the ancient folk tale but with a not so little Red Riding Hood and a werewolf. The setting is the Dark Ages in a small village where Valerie (Amanda Seyfried - Red Riding Hood) is betrothed to the blacksmith's son Henry (Max Irons). Henry & Valerie They make a cute couple, but Valerie has long been in love with Peter (Shiloh Fernandez) a lowly woodcutter. Peter & Valerie This village has been living with a wolf that strikes every full moon but has been placated by goats and pigs left out for it until one night it kills Valerie's sister. Then as the hunting party goes looking for it another man is killed. The truce has been broken and the local priest calls in Father Solomon (Gary Oldman). Inquisitor/Witch Hunter/Werewolf Slayer Father Solomon lets the village know that the werewolf could be any one of them by day and for the rest of the movie the villagers suspect everyone, as do we. It turns out to be a murder mystery as well as a teen love story with two male rivals for one girl. (Hmmm, where have we seen that theme before?) The story has all the elements of the folk tale in it, including a grandmother who lives in the woods and gives Valerie a red hoodie. Red Riding Hood & Grandma The movie had lots of little things wrong with it, but it wasn't that bad. We had several suspects for the werewolf and it was interesting to see who it would not be. It is rated PG-13 and I suspect the target audience as with Twilight is teens who don't care about the liberties taken with Medieval customs, or even the dialogue. After all, it is the expansion of a simple folk tale that's been around for 700 years and dressed up to appeal to this demographic. Of which, very few are movie critics.
I def. want to see it! Wanna be teenager, I am. I think I know who the wolf is, just by the previews. I'll have to see it to be sure, but so much is predictable. Hopefully the romantic parts and action will win out.
I'd probably see this movie...I love these kinds of movies, even though they changed the original story line

Where do you get your statistics on how much of audiences enjoy a movie? Just wondering. This movie looked like most everything wrong with Hollywood wrapped into one neat little package.
Rottentomatoes gives the aggragate critics rating and now gives the audience ratings. http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/girl_with_the_red_riding_hood/ I usually side with the audience, which is the uncultured and unbathed masses who enjoy being entertained rather than think about all the things that are wrong with a movie, which the critics must point out or they would have no job. (Who knows, they may secretly enjoy the bad movies they trash also.)
I tend to side with the critics (although I'm unemployed), except for when they're dumber than the audience (see: Adventureland)
oooh.. is that virginia too? Billy and Viginia? HoT. They got some very good looking actors in this flick. I hope it's at least got some sexual tension..PG-13..hmmm.. and dang.
The pic I posted is about as intense as it gets. They bare their shoulders but don't get undressed. Oops, was that a spoiler? :blush5:
The cinamatography ,costuming and darkness of the film attracts me. But seeing that Gary Oldman is in it--I'd go see it no matter, considering some of his amazing performances, especially what he did in True Romance.
I love Amanda Seyfried and Gary Oldman. I personally haven't seen any previews for this, mainly because I don't watch TV, but I've seen the posters and ads on the internet and it's definitely on my list to see... I was surprised to see all the bad ratings and reviews by critics, but I'm hoping it falls into the so bad it's good category. Thanks for the excellent review, as always, Shale! =D
