If the head stones are gone, how do you know the bodies were buried around 1870?

If you do actually dig these people up to satisfy your morbid curiosity, then I hope you get caught and prosecuted for being a grave robber.

I love most things macabre and goulish, but digging up graves isn't cool.

Walking around graveyards at night can be kinda fun though.

  5. I don't know if it's cool or not but it's certainly intrigued me. If you do go for it I want to know all the details! I'm doing a ghoulish laugh but don't know how to type it. Use your imagination! ;)

I don't really think there is anything disrespectful about digging up graves from 1870. There can't possibly be any living family left and I don't really believe in ghosts. I think there is a possibility that spirits exist on another plane, but I don't really buy into the idea of ghosts retaining a connection to their human body after death.

Someone mentioned archaologists excavations. This really isn't that different. There is a revolutionary war site near where I live and the bodies of the soldiers were just left there to rot and return to the earth - Lately there have been talks of doing an excavation there and digging up the remains. This isn't really much different than that, either. Its certainly macebre and ghoulish and gives me the creeps; its not something I would ever do, but I do have to admit I can see why someone might be tempted.

I don't think you should touch the remains if you find anything. There may not be living family but there could be descendents that are interested enough in geneology to care about their ancestors' graves.
The remains should remain exactly as you find them.

As others have mentioned, there are laws against this kind of thing so you might face repercussions if caught. You might also find once you start digging that this kind of stuff is interesting to think about but too creepy to go through with in reality.

There might also be a health issue... some diseases linger on, and there was a lot of contagious stuff around in the late 19th century. If archaeologists were to excavate a cemetery of that vintage, it'd be protective suits and face masks all round.

On another plane, there's a belief that the spirit of the last person interred becomes the guardian of that graveyard. In an open cemetery, they might be just for a day or two, before the next burial.

In a closed one like this, some poor sod became the final burial with no chance of their spirit moving on.

They might well not be a happy spirit...

Point of Order, there will be no diseases which live on from someone buried during the 19th century.

    this.

I´m personally too much of a pussy to actually do it. But if you do, defenantly tell us what you find, or just leave the casket open so we can see it on the news.

though honestly, if someone out there was really going to do this, I highly doubt they would consult the internet first. If you´re asking us, you´re probably like me. You think it would be cool and intresting and you wish someone would do it, but you never will.

Thank you all for the feedback. I will explain further: The area in question was once a small family plot of 8 stones, a few trees and a small fence. Those buried were original settlers of what is now a rapidly developing area. About 25 years ago the stones were relocated to a nearby larger cemetery and the plot was plowed under and became part of a large cornfield. A descendant of the original family was responsible. Historical topographic maps mark the location. Within the next 5 years the area is slated to become a residential zone. I do wonder why only the stones were moved; maybe it saved money or that the remains would be too difficult to exhume. I am neither spiritual nor superstitious so I am not concerned with that risk. Unless there happens to be veteran law enforcement that happens to remember anything was there there is not much legal risk there. While it is unlikely that I will act on my desire, I would request permission through the proper legal channels. Since the buried were pioneers it is doubtful the remains carry anything of value with them. I personally would like to see the plot restored or have the remains moved to where the stones are but I doubt either of those will happen. Please see this article of possible future scenario: http://www.uticaod.com/news/x1393575335/Human-remains-found-in-Annsville
