When I cut off my dreads, I found a lot of residue inside that seemed to be evaporated Dr. Bronner's. I wouldn't recommend it, since it's so hard to wash out.
I've been using it for a few years and had no probs, just as long as you dilute it X12 and rinse thoroughly !!
ok i didn't have time to post what i wanted to earlier. here is the long version: so my hair's pretty long (about mid-chest) and i've been braiding it like willie nelson for a while now. got tired of that and decided to neglect my hair again, so i went and bought some bronners peppermint bar and started using it. after a few days i noticed that it was taking much longer to blow-dry my hair fully (putting me off schedule in the mornings) and it had a greasy texture, so i decided to experiment with it. even with rinsing for a full10 minutes, my hair would stay wet for longer and be harder to blow-dry. it felt like there was more residue after washing than before. i did this for about two weeks, then switch to baking soda for a week. i have absolutely no problems with baking soda. my hair dries quickly and it doesn't feel like any residue is clinging to it. even using dishsoap seems like there's less residue after the rinse and dry. i think that the reason dreadheads go for bronners is the smell, but it probably does more harm than good, considering the residue it leaves behind. which makes me wonder: if it smells good after you wash it out, how can it be residue free? also, the first ingredient is coconut oil (aka Sodium Laurel Sulfate) which is a known residual agent. it's hard to tell if your shampoo leaves a lot of residue when you have dreads. it's much easier to tell with regular hair. ah well i can still use it for washing my body. anybody else with me?
You can't rely dilute the bar, most use the liquid and can therefore dilute it that's why your getting a build up as it's more concentrated. Try using the liquid and dilute it 12 parts water to 1 part Bronners. If you still get a build up then I don't know ???
I think I dilute it even more, I set up about 10-12:1 and was getting lots of lather and some residue, after getting through half of the mixture I topped it up with water, so now I'm nearer 20:1, little lather and no residue. I'm wearing a black shirt now so I can tell if I've got flakes, and right now I have little to no flakes. I recently started aiming to wash every 2-3 days instead of aiming for 2 times per week. I also try to avoid blow drying, I read that it doesn't help flakes, dunno how true that is though!
I agree with u NP, After a while of using it I noticed the same thing, that's why I stoped using soap all together. But I think it's good way to ease the transition from normal shampoo to none at all.
In my opinion the liquid soap leaves more residue in your hair than the bar, also you can only water it down so much before it becomes useless and even at it's weakest it still seemed to leave my hair with a sticky residue on the outside of my locks. What ratios u planning on using?
probably use 12/1 and 24/1. sometimes, when using the bar, i diluted the lather in a cup so far that it didn't clean my hair, but still left residue.
Also, when I found it left a residue was when I using a lot of it per wash, just glugging it on. Now I try to use 2-3 squirts (sports cap bottle) and no more.
