Bought some cooking poppy seeds the other day and INFESTED the woodlands around my house with poppy seeds. All I did was clear the leaves of fall until the ground was just dirt and took pinches and spread them out. I figure that many should germinate even though i put them on top of the soil. What I want to know is...

    1. How long should I wait before I harvest them, how tall/big should they be.
    2. Should I cut them and come back later for the milk, or should I harvest the pods and make tea? In how many places do I cut them? Is it okay to cut them get sap and cut them again in a week? I have heard that if you the milk then you do this earlier than the pods and the pod harvest comes later?

if they are the mccormick or spice island they are long-period poppies that take 85-100 days to flower. I doubt you will have much luck sewing them in the woods. Poppies need full on sun for at least 6 hours of the day, which a forest floor is definitely too shaded for. Make a nice bed with some topsoil or turn up some dirt in a flower bed or an open field and then scatter with sand, and a little bit of ferts and water. they will sprout much more easily on a prepared bed than randomly thrown on a forest floor. A good idea over at the poppy forum is to make seed bombs - fill sacks full of dirt, organic compost, and shitloads of poppy seeds, and then take the sacks and dump them somewhere right before a rainstorm. Seems to be a decent geurilla poppy seeding method.
